Geographical information is becoming more and more important in the World’s societies. Think of physical planning, risk management, navigation systems, location based services, movement analysis, augmented reality, increasing use of maps and volunteered geographical information.

GIMA is a very complete Master of Science program at University of Twente (UT) , which focuses on the management and application of geographical information from a scientific perspective. In addition to this specific focus, there are two more aspects which make Geographical Information Management and Applications - Part Time a unique Master of Science program: the blended learning concept and the co-operation between four renowned Dutch universities.

Course objectives

The student will:

  • Gain understanding of the nature of the GIMA course
  • Understand that different approaches towards geo-informatics are possible
  • Understand why geo-information is needed to solve problems
  • Obtain practical knowledge on how to use learning and communication tools of the GIMA distance-learning mode

  • During several lectures, the basics of geo-information and geo-informatics as seen from the perspectives of the four participating universities are conveyed
  • Exercise on needs assessment for geo-information: case study Enschede Fireworks Disaster
  • Hands-on experience with Blackboard and GIS

    The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

Previous education: * Bachelors degree in relevant field of science. * Basic knowledge of and experience in geo-information.(The book "Principles of Geographic Information Systems" by Rolf de By, (ITC textbook series), ISBN 90-6164-226-4 is assumed the basic knowledge.) * Sufficient knowledge of and practical experience in using English language. More information here in article 2.2 Teaching and Examination Regulations. * Practical experience in geo-information field is of benefit.

Neso Indonesia:
The Orange Tulip Scholarship (OTS) offers talented students from Indonesia the opportunity to obtain a Master degree at the University of Twente. The scholarship programme is highly selective, offering two scholarships for the academic year 2017/2018 with a value of about € 25,000 each.

StuNed:
StuNed aims for the development of general, economic and environmental governance in Indonesia. To increase the institutional capacity of the Indonesian partner organizations and to strengthen the bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands.

ETS:
The scholarship program is designed to award TOEFL test takers for achieving academic excellence, exhibiting leadership skills, performing extracurricular activities and demonstrating English-communication proficiency.

Colfuturo:
Colfuturo’s main objective is to provide Colombian students with better study opportunities and enable them to contribute with their experiences of studying abroad to the economic and social development of Colombia. A maximum of US$ 25.000 per year and for a maximum of two years may be granted.

Post-9/11 GI Bill:
The Post-9/11 GI Bill is an education benefit program for individuals who served on active duty after September 10, 2001.

Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship:
The Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship provides Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to the children and surviving spouses of service members who died in the line of duty while on active duty after September 10, 2001.

Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO):
Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO) is, among other things, responsible for the distribution of Dutch student grants. The IB-groep can provide financial support to international students as well, through grants or loans.

Erasmus+:
Erasmus+ Master Loans allow students to apply for financial support for their Master's studies abroad. Loans will be offered by participating banks and student loan agencies on favorable conditions to mobile students, including better than market interest rates.
