About

University of Oulu has a long tradition in the education and research in Biomedical Engineering (BME). BME is a fast-evolving research theme under the Information Technology focus area of the University.

The International Master’s Programme in Biomedical Engineering: Biomechanics and Imaging at the University of Oulu is research oriented to offer a strong basis for research career. The contributing departments have received excellent grades from an international research assessment panel. The education is systematized with strongly interdisciplinary approach. Master’s theses are completed in participating research groups.

The programme structure and contents is based on the most recent international recommendations for BME education. University of Oulu has actively participated in several European level projects in BME education, including BIOMEDEA,EAMBES and TEMPUS project Curricula Reformation and Harmonization in Biomedical Engineering (CRH-BME, 2009-2011).Students of our faculty (Faculty of Medicine) focus on biomechanics and biomedical imaging. BME courses are given by:

  • Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, Department of Computer Science and Engineering,Optoelectronics and Measurement Techniques Laboratory

Learning outcomes

After completing the Master’s degree the student is able to

  • obtain and evaluate critically novel knowledge and special know-how in the field, and use and apply it independently and creatively in the biomedical engineering research and development (R&D)
  • conduct research work by using scientific research methods
  • produce new knowledge for the needs of industry and society
  • participate in industrial R&D and expert tasks in the field
  • put in practice mathematical modeling and analysis algorithms for processing physiological signals and medical images
  • plan and perform measurement systems for biomechanics
Occupational profiles of graduates
  • Research, education, and specialist duties in academia and research institutes.
  • Developing and testing products in the industry as well as marketing and post-marketing support and managerial tasks.
  • Consulting on the use and procurement of products, evaluation of performance, maintenance, customization of appliances to clinical and research needs in health care units.
  • Public official tasks related to the quality control and management.
After graduation

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score: 6.5

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

  • Minimum required score (Grade C): 180

    The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

    Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.

  • Minimum required score: 580

    The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).   • Minimum required score: 92

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

Programme Specific Academic Requirements
  • Bachelor’s (or higher) degree in biomedical engineering, biophysics, physics, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or other related fields
General admission requirements
  • very good or excellent grades in Basic studies in Mathematical Sciences (e.g. mathematics, physics) and
  • the applicant should have an university level Bachelor's degree, or equivalent university level degree, suitable for biomedical engineering studies, with very good or excellent grades.
Sufficient English language proficiency as demonstrated by one of the following alternatives
  • Minimum of 20 ECTS credits of studies conducted in English language at a higher education institution in Finland
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in English
  • An approved language test
