Master's Programme in Product Management at the University of Oulu is a two-year programme taught in English. The programme educates product management professionals who can actively manage products and the product range. The focus is on technology product management. It builds on the engineering disciplines and focuses on product management.

ProM provides courses in contemporary topics, with an emphasis on product management.The core of the programme is the product development process, the delivery process and the entire demand-supply chain. Problem-solving and communication skills in international context are highlighted. ProM includes close collaboration with industry and lectures practical cases to enhance the learning experience. Guest lecturers from industry are often invited to speak. Assignments are typically connected to practical industrial challenges, allowing students to gain industry experience as they start building networks in the business world. ProM also has strong links to all engineering disciplines at the Faculty of Technology.

Studying Product Management combines knowledge from engineering and management sciences. Students’ technical background acts as a foundation for applying product management methods in product creation and delivery process. The graduates will be competent in different product management aspects from productivity and quality to information and technology management. They will be capable to enhance productivity, quality and well-being, and can use their knowledge when solving challenging problems in all industries. Graduates will have a good background for doctoral studies.

Career Opportunities

The programme provides the graduates with competence to work in the field of product management in several tasks, with close links to engineering disciplines.

Potential job titles are, for example, Account Manager, Customer Quality Engineer, Development Manager, and Project Manager. The graduates can work in various industries.

Applicant Profile

A successful applicant of the programme already has a strong engineering background from their earlier studies. A Bachelor’s (or higher) degree in relevant fields of engineering such as civil engineering, environmental engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering is a prerequisite. The previous degree should include the minimum of 60 ECTS in mathematics, physics or engineering.

In the programme, the students start with the basic concepts and continue to different aspects of product management.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score: 6.5

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.   • Minimum required score: 580

    The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).   • Minimum required score: 92

Prerequisites
  1. Bachelor’s (or higher) degree in relevant fields of engineering such as civil engineering, environmental engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering.
  • Those who will receive their degree after the deadline of the application, but before August are eligible to apply.
  • General admission requirements for the Faculty of Technology.

Application procedure

STAGE 1: Written applications
  1. Take the language test and submit the result.
  2. Fill in the online application. All available study programmes of University of Oulu can be found on the Studyinfo portal where you can search for suitable programmes and start the application.
  3. Print out the application form, sign it, and send it with all the requested documents to the University Admissions Finland.
  4. Find two referees to give recommendations.

  • Two reference letters are needed. The referees should send them directly to the University Admissions Finland. Please follow the instructions provided by the Studyinfo portal. The reference forms must be received by the deadline of the application which is mentioned in Studyinfo portal.
STAGE 2: Interview

On the basis of the written applications, the selection committee will invite a number of applicants with the highest points to an interview (in English). Applicants will be interviewed via skype, telephone, or other accessible method.

Applicants selected for an interview will be invited by e-mail at the latest by week 11. The interviews will take placeduring the weeks11-13.

Selection criteria

The applications are evaluated based on the following criteria:

Written applications (max 16 points)

  1. The level and the relevance of the applicant's overall study record in the Bachelor's degree and other studies: grade of the Bachelor’s thesis (if not available, the overall grade of Bachelor’s degree studies) (0–10 points)
  2. The quality of the applicant's Motivation Letter* (0–2 points)
  3. The quality of the applicant's Research Interest* (0–2 points)
  4. Sufficient language proficiency
  5. Reference letters (0–2 points)

Interview (max 10 points)

The maximum points available from the interview is 10 points. To be selected, applicants must obtain at least 5 points from the interview.

There will be 20 students selected to the Master's programme according to the points. If two or more applicants score the same number of points, their order shall be determined on the basis of the relevance and the level of the applicant's overall study record in the Bachelor's degree.

Final Selection

The final selection is carried on the basis of written applications and the interview. There will be 20 students selected to the Master's programme according to the total points. If two or more applicants score the same number of points, their order shall be determined on the basis of the relevance and the level of the applicant's overall study record in the Bachelor's degree.

An applicant is entitled to information on how his/her points were calculated. Any appeals shall be delivered to in writing to the Board of Examiners and sent to the Registry Office within 14 days from the publication of the results.
