About

Utrecht's University Master of Science in Epidemiology will examine the distribution and determinants of health and morbidity in specific populations. With evidence-based medicine setting new standards, specialists are needed for the design, data collection, analysis and interpretation of epidemiological and health research. 

This scientific discipline is increasingly in demand in clinical research, industry and policymaking.

What you'll learn?

In the Epidemiology programme you will learn to operate as an epidemiologist and clinical researcher. You can choose your specialization such as Clinical Epidemiology, Infectious Diseases Epidemiology, Pharmacoepidemiology, Medical Statistics, Environmental & Occupational Epidemiology or Veterinary Epidemiology. During the programme, you will explore the field of epidemiology through six months of intensive coursework. This includes basic epidemiological and statistical courses as well as advanced courses in your chosen specialization. You will also have the opportunity to enhance and broaden your knowledge through additional topic-specific courses, such as Genetic Epidemiology and Cardiovascular Epidemiology.

Career

After graduation, students obtain an MSc degree in Biomedical Sciences, Epidemiology, which prepares them for a subsequent PhD programme or a career as an epidemiologist in settings such as academia, privately funded and governmental public health organisations, and human or veterinary medicine or industry, including pharmaceutical development.

Clinical Epidemiology, Veterinary Epidemiology, and Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases focus on fundamental and applied epidemiological research in human and veterinary medicine, research, and consultancy, and offer advice in health and veterinary organisations or in the business world or pharmaceutical industries. Pharmacoepidemiology focuses on fundamental and applied research on drug benefits, risks, and utilisation at universities and research institutes, in various health organisations or in the pharmaceutical industry. Environmental & Occupational Epidemiology focuses on research in environmental and occupational epidemiology in academic, privately funded, or governmental health organisations.

English Language Requirements

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.     The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

Besides TOEFL, IELTS and CAE, also Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE - at least Grade C) is accepted as a proof of English Proficiency.

You will be considered for admission to the Master's programme Epidemiology if you hold a Bachelor's degree of a University and can demonstrate:

  • High level of academic and professional ability.
  • A clear motivation and talent for participation in the programme.
  • You are able to express yourself in proficient English, both orally and in written text, as evidenced by your motivation letter and/or writing sample, and the interview that is part of the selection procedure.
