Particle physics is one of the strong areas within Experimental Physics in Utrecht. The slightly broader field of Subatomic Physics (including also Nuclear Physics) has a long tradition of excellence at Utrecht University, recently Utrecht has concentrated more on high profile research on elementary particles. The research is performed in international collaborations at research centers in the USA and in Europe. Nationally, the group cooperates in the Nikhef consortium. For the teaching programme in the MSc there is a strong cooperation with the Amsterdam universities. Utrecht is the only Dutch university to contribute to ALICE, one of the large experiments at the new accelerator LHC at CERN in Geneva. The research has an intimate connection to different areas of theoretical physics (Quantum Field Theory, Relativistic Hydrodynamics and even String Theory) and is of relevance also for Astrophysics. It uses state-of-the-art technologies in particle detection, electronics and computing.
