The Master’s programme in Climate Physics from Utrecht University offers you a unique combination of theoretical courses and practical training in all aspects of the Earth’s climate. You’ll study the physics, dynamics, and chemistry of the atmosphere, oceans, and cryosphere – as well as explore their interactions.

About

The two-year Climate Physics programme from Utrecht University trains you to be a highly skilled researcher by focusing on the fundamental physical processes that make up the Earth’s climate system. The complex nature of the work requires advanced mathematical skills right from the start. You will build on this foundation by adding specialised theoretical, observational, and computational knowledge and skills relating to the atmosphere, meteorology, oceans, cryosphere (ice), and biosphere. Moreover, your instructors will encourage you to develop a critical attitude towards your research results and your underlying assumptions.

Programme Objective

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score: 6.5

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

  • You have an International Bachelor’s Degree (Equivalent to a Dutch Bachelor’s Degree): with a major in physics; with a major in Science, including a substantial number of credits in advanced undergraduate physics and calculus; or a bachelor’s with at least second-class honors (or equivalent honors, GPA, or other rating) issued by an accredited institution of higher education in the Netherlands.
  • You can demonstrate a solid basic knowledge in classical physics, especially fluid dynamics, as well as in the mathematics required for studying scientific topics at an advanced level.
  • Proof of your proficiency in English (CAE- Level B, CPC- Grade C).
