This part-time, online masters programme is designed to equip you with the knowledge and practical skills to help you make positive social change. This programme offers you the opportunity to critically engage with foundational ideas and debates about equality, fairness, power, democracy and citizenship and consider a range of actions in communities, in policy and legislation processes and in organisations for the real world application of these ideas.

About

The MSc in Social Justice and Community Action is a joint initiative of the Moray House School of Education and the Global Justice Academy.

Online learning

You will join a vibrant and supportive digital community of staff and students and study at the times and in the places that suit you best. The programme will be taught through a rich mix of online methods, including podcasts, group work and independent study.

To access your courses you will need to have a computer with a broadband internet connection. The programme does not require specialist IT skills.

  • professionals working on social justice issues in research, policy or grassroots practice in the public, private or non-governmental sectors across the globe
  • recent graduates who wish to gain the skills to enter the social justice field

This programme can support students to work on social justice issues in grassroots community practice, public policy development and implementation and social research in non-governmental organisations and in the public and private sectors across the globe. You will acquire a range of transferable skills, such as research, communication and project management, which can be applied to roles in any field.

This programme will be taught through a mix of online methods including podcasts, group work and independent study. You will complete four compulsory courses, two option courses and a supervised dissertation project.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score:

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.   • Minimum required score (Grade A):

    The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

A UK 2:1 or its international equivalent is normally required. Exceptions may be made for those applicants with substantial practice or research experience or other relevant qualifications.
