In this Postgraduate Master’s programme you will examine the distribution and determinants of health and morbidity in specific populations. With evidence-based medicine setting new standards, there is a growing demand for specialists working on the design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation of epidemiological and health research. This scientific discipline is increasingly in demand in clinical research (human, pharmaceutical, and veterinary), industry and policymaking. Epidemiology Postgraduate is offered as:

  • Epidemiology Postgraduate, a face-to-face programme taught in Utrecht (1.5 years)
  • Epidemiology Postgraduate Online programmewill be studied online (3-5 years)

The difference between both master's programmes is the learning method. The course content of the face-to-face programme (Epidemiology Postgraduate) is identical to the online programme (Epidemiology Postgraduate Online). All courses within Epidemiology Postgraduate Online are offered by the platform of Elevate Health.

Programme Structure

In the Epidemiology Postgraduate programme you will learn to operate as an epidemiologist and clinical researcher. The aim of our programme is to provide you with extensive knowledge and practical skills in patient-oriented research design, implementation, quantitative analysis and its application to human or veterinary medicine and public health. The gained knowledge and skills form a solid basis for health research and disease control programs, including application in Low and Lower-Middle Income countries. The programme consists of core courses specialization courses and a research project.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score:

    6.5

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

    The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

You have a Master’s Degree (equivalent to a Dutch Master’s Degree) in: MSc in Life Sciences; Physicians (MD); Veterinarians (DVM); Pharmacists (PharmD); Other relevant science degree.

You are able to express yourself in proficient English, both orally and in written text, as evidenced by your motivation letter and/or writing sample, and the interview that is part of the selection procedure.

Further accepted proof of your proficiency in English: CPE- at least Grade C

At least 1 year(s) of work experience are required.

As all courses of this programme are offered online, you do need access to a computer with internet connection to be able to access the Virtual Learning Environment, to follow lectures, open documents, to complete assignments and communicate with fellow participants. Other requirements: - Microsoft Silverlight (free downloadable) • Preferrred browser: latest version of Google Chrome • Microsoft (Open) Office • Statistical Program ‘’R’’ (free downloadable) Please note that for some courses, the statistical program ‘’SPSS’’ is required. As a student of Utrecht University, you may receive discount on the costs.
