About

The two-year Research Master in Business Research - Strategy and Entrepreneurship at Erasmus University Rotterdam focuses on the development of academic competencies and skills on a personal level.

A maximum of 30 students each year attend the international research master programme, which is taught in English. The small class size means you soon settle into class and have close contact with your tutors and classmates.

In the ERIM Research Master, you choose one of five domains of management:

  • Business Processes, Logistics & Information Systems
  • Organisation
  • Marketing
  • Finance
  • Strategy & Entrepreneurship.

In the first year, you follow courses on research methodology and methods, the foundations of management, plus your chosen specialisation.

In the second year, you choose from a number of advanced courses on methodology and advanced research in your specialisation. As an ERIM research master student, you receive training in presentation, publishing and academic writing. You actively participate in research seminars with ERIM faculty, visiting professors and fellows.

This programme builds on a university Bachelor degree. You will be thoroughly trained in research methodology and techniques, as well as in your chosen field of expertise which will be required if you want to continue to the PhD stage of the programme.

When you have completed all of the course requirements, you will be granted a master degree. The certificate and supplement state that you’ve completed a two-year programme, the Research Master in Business and Management, which according to Dutch law gives you the title ‘MSc’.

Following this, if you wish to pursue a PhD, you should officially apply to the PhD programme.

Career Prospects

ERIM has celebrated more than 275 successful PhD defences since 2000.

The ERIM Doctoral programme trains you for your PhD studies and beyond. Career prospects can include future research, or an academic position in management. If you continue your studies and embark onto a PhD programme at ERIM, your career prospects can include research in management at European and North American business schools – where qualified PhD researchers are in demand.

The best performers from the ERIM Doctoral programme proceed to a PhD position and an academic research career, either at ERIM, where the majority of our doctoral programme graduates continue their study, or at other Dutch and international universities.

Graduates from the ERIM doctoral programme who decide not to pursue a PhD win research-oriented jobs outside academia in large international organisations, consultancies and banks.

Quality Assurance

At ERIM, you’re in good hands. Our quality assurance procedures are structured to monitor every level and track of the ERIM Research Master, internally and externally.

ERIM was officially accredited by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in 1999 and was re-accredited for another six years in 2010.

The ERIM Research Master programme was accredited by the Dutch and Flemish Accreditation Organisation for Higher Education (NVAO) in 2004. Re-accreditation took place in 2015, and will stand for another six years. The programme also has a process of internal quality assurance, embedded in the accreditation process of ERIM as research school, and within the international accreditation of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM).

RSM is part of an elite group of less than 1% of business schools worldwide that hold the ‘Triple Crown’ accreditation from the three leading international accreditation organisations; The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, AACSB; the Association of MBAs, AMBA; and EQUIS, the European Quality Improvement System. These organisations regularly asses all programmes offered by RSM, including ERIM programmes.

The internal quality assurance of the ERIM Research Master programme is monitored and evaluated at various levels and points. All students are asked to fill out an evaluation form after each course. Results are communicated to course co-ordinators and lecturers.

The programme is also evaluated in specialisation areas and research track levels. A track co-ordinator is appointed for each of the five tracks (LIS, ORG, MKT, F&A, and S&E), and each is a leading scholars in their field. They discuss your progress and potential course opportunities. They also evaluate the coherence of the courses and suggest improvements for your track programme. External evaluation of the programme takes place at regular intervals.

Academic Requirements

You can apply to the Research Master in Business and Management if you’re a university Bachelor of Science or Arts graduate or if you hold a Dutch doctorandus degree. You must be a high performing student from a business or economic school and from fields such as psychology, sociology and engineering.

Your admission to the ERIM Research Master programme is based on the following:

  • GMAT-test (Graduate Management Admission Test) or GRE-test (Graduate Record Examinations). Your test results shouldn’t be older than five years. An indication of your required score is 85 per cent.
  • Proof of your proficiency in English if it’s not your native language. You have to provide ERIM with a TOEFL or IELTS test, which shouldn’t be older than two years. For TOEFL, you’re required a score of at least 100 on the internet based test or 600 on the paper test. For IELTS, your minimum score must be 7.5.
  • Your CV, academic references and interviews with the Doctoral Admissions Committee.

To preserve and offer you an outstanding level of research in management, ERIM’s admission criteria are very selective. This guarantees that you’ll be in a top-quality research environment with high-potential researchers.

Tuition Fee Per Year

  • EUR 17300 International
  • EUR 2006 EU/EEA

Funding

ERIM offers a limited number of subsistence allowances to its very best applicants. The subsistence allowance amounts either € 5,000 or € 10,000 (which is sufficient to cover the living costs in the Netherlands for one year). If you would like to apply for this subsistence allowance, you have to submit a written scholarship application with the rest of your application package.

Your scholarship application should include a motivation letter and a financial statement proving your need for financial support. ERIM also offers a reduced tuition fee to several excellent non-EEA students. This means that instead of paying a tuition fee of €17,000 per year, you would have to pay €1,984. The decision on granting the reduced fee is made after you’ve been accepted into the programme.
