About

Master’s Programme in Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) educates engineers who can develop and lead businesses with an entrepreneurial mindset. The programme combines engineering with economic and human fundamentals to create value and efficiency. IEM studies explore the foundations of business and engineering processes, and inspire a systemic, solution-oriented engineering mindset to develop business.

The distinctive feature of IEM at Aalto University is its focus on strategic and entrepreneurial leadership in business development, complementing the approaches of classical industrial engineering on developing processes and complex systems. This combination emphasizes the focus on the capability to solve the right problems right, i.e. identify needs, define problems accordingly, and solve them effectively.

Creating value through proactive problem solving

The IEM program provides a cross-disciplinary skill set consisting of mathematical, technological, economic, and social competences that focuses on proactive problem solving in value creating processes. In essence, the ethos of IEM studies emphasizes a systemic, solution oriented engineering mindset. Building on these foundations, the program develops strong competencies for the creation and transformation of technology-based business combining strategic, operations, and people perspectives.

Career opportunities

Studies in Industrial Engineering and Management lead to diverse career paths. Careers in service industry, research and development, and business development and management are common, as are also service purchasing and requirements engineering in both public and private sectors. Expert positions in consulting, research or educational organisations are possible as well.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score:

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

    The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

  • Minimum required score:

    The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). The writing part of this test is scored separately on a scale of 0-6. Read more about TOEFL (PBT).

  • Minimum required score:

    92

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

In addition to the compulsory application documents, the following, additional application documents are appreciated:

  • Relevant Master's Degree certificate (if available) (officially attested)
  • Certificates of relevant university-level non-degree studies
  • Letter of recommendation (at least one). The recommendation should be written by a person who has supervised you in either academic or employment capacity. The recommendation must be delivered in a sealed envelope.
  • Relevant letters of reference and other certificates of relevant activities. In case you have work experience or other activities that could support your application, include copies of these documents to your application.
  • Results of GRE- or GMAT-test

Prospective students subject to tuition fees are eligible to apply for Aalto University Scholarship.
