Latin American Studies (LAS) is not an individual degree programme but a specialisation programme under the Study Board of International

Latin American Studies at Aalborg University can be chosen:

  • as a specialisation in the two-year master programmes Development and International Relations (DIR) or European Studies (ES) (both campus Aalborg)
  • as two modules of each 5 ECTS as part of another programme, e.g. Culture, Communication and Globalization (CCG), Tourism, International Business Communication, History, etc.

Latin American Studies provides a broad understanding of contemporary and historical issues in Latin America's development, as well as the scale of Latin America's impact on the world economy and global relations.

The Latin American Studies programme consists of a number of lectures on MA level aimed at introducing topics in a problem-based and interdisciplinary manner. Through this approach students will be capable of comprehending and analysing Latin America related issues in a holistic and coherent combination.

Language Courses (1st and 2nd semester)

Language courses in Spanish at basic and advanced level will be offered at both 1st and 2nd semester.

Internship/Semester Abroad (3rd semester)

During the 3rd semester, you will do an internship in a private company, NGO or public organisation in Latin America or with relevance for Latin America, or you will spend a semester abroad at a Latin American university.

Master Thesis (4th semester)

The topic of your thesis must have Latin American relevance.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score: 6.5

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

    The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).   • Minimum required score: 88

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

Latin American Studies (LAS) is an interdisciplinary specialisation. A bachelor’s degree in social sciences or humanities such as History, Human Geography, Law, Anthropology, Languages and International Studies (SIS) or Communication and Cultural Studies qualifies for admission.

Latin American Studies (LAS) can also be chosen alongside an existing Master’s programme, e.g.

  • History
  • Sociology
  • Public Administration.

Faculties including engineering and technical sciences can also enrol in the LAS specialisation as part of their Master’s programme.

Foreign students are required to pass one of the English proficiency tests accepted by Aalborg University. These are IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge ESOL. The test has to be less than two years old, otherwise it will not be accepted as valid. Danish students must have no less than a B-level in English.

You do not have to submit an English test if one of the following criteria applies to you:

  • You have completed a bachelor’s degree in English from a university in Australia, the UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, USA, New Zealand, South Africa or Canada.
  • You have completed a bachelor’s degree in English from a Danish University.
