In combining linguistics, literary studies, history, and art history, this programme offers you the opportunity to extend your knowledge of Spain, Portugal, and Latin America in various directions. A variety of optional courses allows you to tailor your study route.
Designed to provide a genuine international experience, the programme features student exchange opportunities and regularly invites visiting professors. Our student body comprises a wide variety of nationalities. Courses are taught in Spanish or Portuguese.
You are ideally suited for this programme if you have good skills in Spanish and/or Portuguese and are keen to learn more about these languages and their speakers. You must also be able to collect and process scholarly information independently. The programme is interdisciplinary and assumes basic knowledge of Spain, Portugal, and Latin America.
This programme is an excellent preparation for a career in research, while its interdisciplinary nature also positions you well for posts in various sectors, including journalism, education, governmental services, NGOs, and companies maintaining strong relationships with Spain, Portugal, or Latin-America.
The programme (60 credits) consists of 4 compulsory courses, a number of optional courses, and a Master's thesis. The core courses reflect the programme's interdisciplinary nature, combining linguistics, literature, history and art history. A wide range of optional courses (some offered at Louvain-la-Neuve, Leuven's francophone sister university) also allow you to explore other disciplines, such as anthropology or sociology. The Master´s thesis, written in Spanish or Portuguese, is a scholarly work of some 40 pages.

Applicants may be asked to submit certified course descriptions in Afrikaans, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish. Submitting such documents along with the application will speed up the admissions process.
Applications from students with a degree of "Licenciado" or"Ingeniero" that was obtained at the end of a four- or five-year programme at a Latin American university, and that included the writing of an academic dissertation in the last year, will also be taken into account, provided the other admission requirements are met.
