The Biology of Physical Activity programme from University of Jyvskyl educates academic experts who understand the interaction mechanisms between different physiological systems and physical exercise, and their theoretical background.


The MS in Biology of Physical Activity programme offered by University of Jyväskylä is designed to prepare students for careers in research centres, medical rehabilitation centres, sports medicine and exercise testing centres, sports academies and physical exercise and sports organisations. It also qualifies students to apply for postgraduate studies in the field.

Programme Structure

The two-year Master's degree programme offers three possible fields of specialisation to choose from:

  • Exercise Physiology, including cellular and molecular adaptation, cardiorespiratory function and human physiology
  • Science of Sport Coaching and Fitness Testing, including scientific bases and applications of fitness testing, strength and power training, and endurance trainin
  • Biomechanics, including muscle-tendon mechanics, neuromuscular function and human movement

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score: 6.5

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

  • Minimum required score: 580

    The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).   • Minimum required score: 92

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

1) Bachelor of Sciencedegree in a related field, for example

  • Biomechanics, Exercise physiology, Sport coaching and fitness testing
  • Sport and exercise science
  • Biomedical engineering, Physics
  • Kinesiology, Motor control
  • Biochemistry
  • Human biology
  • Other field relevant to biology of physical activity

2) A good command of both written and spoken English

  • documentation in terms of a TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, CAE or CPE test score is required; more information in the section "Application Process"

3) Additional selection criteria

  • relevant research / work experience
  • international studies completed abroad
  • basic knowledge in statistics and computer skills
  • clearly articulated motivation for applying for the programme
