The ArtEZ Fashion Masters, one of the best-known Master Fashion courses in Europe, is based in Arnhem, the fashion capital of the Netherlands. Its programmes were developed from the renowned bachelor curriculum of the Fashion Design department set up in 1953, counting Viktor & Rolf and Iris van Herpen among its graduates.

We offer two unique accredited Masters: the Master Fashion Design and the Master Fashion Strategy. Together they cover the vast variety of subjects of the contemporary fashion sector.

Our mission is to provide a focused and comprehensive education for talented professionals in a considerate environment where novelty, personal style, creativity and originality are embraced and further developed with the aim to help them to turn their talent into business.

Funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, our fulltime, two-year curricula rely on English as language of instruction. Our Masters building, located in the city centre, houses large studios and several seminar rooms. ArtEZ also has many other facilities at its disposal, such as a photo studio, a silk-screen studio and a knitting room.


The Master Fashion Strategy has been designed for students who want to explore the context and meaning of fashion as a cultural phenomenon in order to apply this knowledge to a range of professions across the creative industries.

Starting from both theory and practice, students focus on the development of an original strategic vision. Students learn how to develop and communicate research-based concepts, which are relevant to contemporary fashion and lifestyle industries.

A project of three months within a company is part of the curriculum. During this Master course, students are encouraged to concentrate on a particular sector of the industry, such as branding, futurising, fashion journalism or fashion curation.

Graduates of the Master Fashion Strategy find a position as strategic fashion designer, concept designer, fashion or lifestyle journalist, trend forecaster or trend researcher, fashion curator and so on.


Our approach

Designers who reflect on the meaning of fashion add value to their designs, according toJosé Teunissen, who holds a professorship in fashion theory at ArtEZ and is responsible for the contextual components of the two Masters.

Starting from a solid theoretical foundation, the Fashion Masters aims to equip students with a variety of research and design skills.In addition to the set curriculum in the first year, students are encouraged to engage in experimentation and independent research, as well as participate in a range of external projects. While working in small groups they learn to evaluate their own activities and discover their abilities in terms of talent, skills and motivation. In this way, the Fashion Masters students receive tailor-made education.

Professional guidance

Apart from our academic staff, a number of leading experts from the international field of fashion and related creative sectors offer supervision to our Master students, such as the designer duo Spijkers en Spijkers and trend watcher and publisher David Shah.

Personal coaching by experienced professionals supports students in their individual development. This personal one-to-one approach is one of the main tools to ensure the student's academic, creative and professional progress. Our tutors provide students with concrete experience of the fashion industry while simultaneously allowing them to develop an international network of original partners.

An applicant has to register at Studielink in time. Subsequently the applicant will be asked to submit a digital portfolio by email or file sharing (e.g.: with We Transfer), a resume (C.V.) and a short letter of motivation (both in English). An initial selection will be made on the basis of this portfolio, letter of motivation and resume. The portfolio contains a visually attractive overview of former work, potentially consisting of free work, assignments, written articles, etc. Selected applicants will be sent an assignment.
After receiving the result of the assignment a second selection will take place. The applicants selected will be invited for an interview before an admission committee in the period March-late June. Applicants who are not selected for the second selection or for the interview will be notified within 4 weeks after we received the documents mentioned above.
The admission committee will consist at least three members: a lecturer, a student and the Course Director (or a substitute). After the interview, applicants will be notified within 2 weeks on whether they are admitted or not. If the committee needs more time to make an admission decision, we reserve the right to put the applicant on a waiting list. In that case, the outcome will not be known until 2 weeks after the next admission date.


Students who have relevant bachelor's degree: for example in Fashion or Product Design, (Marketing) Communication, Journalism, Media Studies or Cultural Studies are eligible to apply for the Master Fashion Strategy. It is also possible to apply for the Master Fashion Strategy without a Bachelor degree but with a minimum of 8-year relevant work experience. In that case also a minimum of 3 reference letters most be delivered. Applicants will be evaluated in terms of their talent and development potential for the specialisation in question. We will admit a maximum of twelve applicants for the Master Fashion Strategy.


The language of instruction of our courses is English. Applicants must have a basic fluency in English, a skill that will be tested at the entrance exam. In case of doubts about the applicants proficiency in English, we may require them to take an IELTS test with a minimum score of 6.0 (for all parts).
