As a student, you are expected to have an independent attitude and working method, which will continually be tested on a clear and well-founded vision of the future. The Master of Music programme will be made up individually in part, on the basis of the student´s focus and vision on his/her future professional practice. The focus and vision are expressed in the chosen research project, (external) projects and the internship. In the research project, you will focus on a subject that is relevant to your future professional practice, and you will show the results and conclusions in a final product (thesis, CD or DVD) and presentation (lecture, lecture-recital or workshop).

Pathways

As a student of the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU), you will also be encouraged to set up interdisciplinary projects and to create cross-overs. In order to prepare optimally for the versatility and high demands of music practice, the programme also comprises theoretical, historical and philosophical backgrounds, training in business and organisational skills, coaching, masterclasses en clinics. For Performance students, there is also training in Stage Presentation and Music, Mind & Body.

During the first month of your course, you will write a study plan, in which you outline your future prospects and study goals. In order to stimulate and support your individual development, artistic development and communication skills, we provide individual coaching based on the study plan, and tutor supervision in the area of general study progress.

The Master of Music has two pathways: Performance and Music Design.
The Performance pathway comprises the courses Performing Musician, Music & Arts Education, Church Music, Carillon and Musical Entrepreneurship.

Performance pathway

In order to be accepted for this pathway, you must have completed a professional music course at bachelors level. There are various courses within the Performance pathway:

Music Design pathway

Within the Music Design pathway, you can specialise in Composition, Music Production, Music Technology and Sound Design. You can follow this pathway if you have successfully completed a Bachelors course in composition, music production, music technology, sound design, or a similar course.


Study programme: individual development As a student, you are expected to have an independent attitude and working method, which will continually be tested on a clear and well-founded vision of the future. You will describe this vision of the future your own focus on and vision of your future professional practice in a study plan.

Requirements

The Faculty Board assesses the validity of foreign diplomas. All foreign diplomas, certificates and lists of marks should be supplied in the Dutch, English, French or German language; other languages are not accepted.

Language Test

All students whose mother tongue is not English, who intend to follow their studies in the English language are required to take a language test to show that their mastery of the language is sufficient to succesfully complete their studies. There are two standard tests:
a. The TOEFL-test (you need a score of 575)
b. The IELTS-test (you need a score of 6.5)
