For almost two decades, our Master of Science in Biostatistics and Master of Science in Applied Statistics Programmes have allowed
around 500 graduates to start a career in (biopharmaceutical)industry, in academia, and in governmental agencies. We proudly add a third specialization: Bioinformatics. Our graduates, with origins not only from Belgium or Europe, but from all over the globe, provide proof of the availability of exciting jobs for applied- and
biostatistics scientists in a variety of environments.

The need for well-trained applied statisticians,
biostatisticians and bioinformaticians is ever increasing,
enhanced by the scientific revolution
in molecular biology and genetics, and its impact
on health and the environment. The Master
of Statistics of the Hasselt University, with
specialization: Applied Statistics, Biostatistics,
Bioinformatics keep abreast with such evolutions.
The master study programme combines
a solid study of principles of applied and biostatistics
with up-to-date training in topics such
as clinical trials, public health, longitudinal data,
survival analysis, genetics, survey methodology,
.... The new specialization in Bioinformatics
allows keeping an even closer pace with
the more specific professional needs and skills
required by the developments of the novel experimental
techniques in molecular biology and


The program consists of lectures and homeworks in a typical semester systems, i.e. lectures from october through december. Exams in January. lectures from February through May. Final exams in June.

Possible retake exams in September.


All applicants should hold a university diploma equivalent to a bachelor degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, biology, physics, chemistry. For other bachelor degrees, the Admission Board will consider the applications individually.

In addition to the standard admission requirements (you should:

* hold a bachelor degree in: mathematics, physics, computer sciences, chemistry, biology, life sciences, (bio, business, civil)-engineering, medicine, sociology, psychology, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, etc. with a basic but sufficiently strong background in mathematics and statistics. The Examination Board will consider each application individually and admission can be given directly, conditionally or indirectly after finalization of a preparatory programme.
* hold an academic bachelor obtained from a Belgian university, in mathematics, physics, computer sciences, chemistry, biology, life sciences, bio-, business-, civil engineering to be directly admitted.
