The international master’s degree programme in Architecture at University of Oulu is a two-year design-oriented study programme. The courses are taught by professionals with wide range expertise in the field of architecture and urban design. Professors of the school are internationally recognized architects actively involved in the profession and architectural debate both in Finland and internationally. 

About

The degree awarded is an architect’s professional degree, providing the right to practice the architect’s profession in Finland and the European Union according to the national laws and decrees.

The Architecture study programme offered by University of Oulu provides students with skills, knowledge and advanced tools in:

  • design of urban areas and spaces
  • public building design
  • detailing of buildings and urban structures
  • use of Nordic building materials (e.g. wood)
  • architectural lighting
  • interior design
  • research and theory of architecture
  • academic writing
  • team work and presentation

The School of Architecture has recently become a part of the university’s main campus in Linnanmaa, and will at the beginning of the year 2018 move into tailored and newly renovated premises in the campus. The school has its own computer labs for architecture students and workshops for professional model making. In Fab Lab Oulu the university provides common facilities, tools and instruction for digital fabrication and 2D and 3D laser cutting.

Career prospects:

After graduation the students are eligible to carry on to doctoral studies at the University of Oulu. Most architects work as building designers and urban designers. Additional career options for an architect may be

Programme Structure

Courses are organized as semester-long integrated studio projects, ranging from larger scale urban design tasks to designing of public buildings, as well as detailing of buildings and urban structures:

  • Design-led Urban Renewal
  • Design of Public Buildings
  • Advanced Architectural Design
  • Thesis project

Studies are carried out both individually and in multicultural teams in an international working environment. Nordic nature, climate and light circumstances offer a living laboratory for lighting experiments in 1:1 scale. Varying courses and additional study options give possibilities to integrate student competitions or workshops in the student’s individual study plan.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score: 6.5

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

  • Minimum required score (Grade C): 180

    The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

    Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.

  • Minimum required score: 580

    The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).   • Minimum required score: 92

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. Bachelor's Degree in Architecture with 'very good' or 'excellent' marks, 'very good' or 'excellent' design skills presented in a portfolio.
  • The Bachelor's degree should be equivalent to 180 ECTS, or at least three years of full-time studies in architecture, including studies in history of architecture, architectural design, urban design, building physics and technology.
  • Applicants from EU/EAAE countries, whose university does not award a Bachelor's degree, may still apply if completed 180 ECTS of studies in architecture at a higher institute of education
