The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill University offers unprecedented opportunities for the training of Master's, Doctoral, and Postdoctoral students and fellows in the application of cutting-edge technologies to molecular cell biology.

In addition to the graduate training program in hypothesis-driven research carried out by leading investigators in the Department, there is also a new program in Human Systems Biology. This program provides training in the application of high throughput proteomics, genomics, and bioinformatics to the study of human and animal tissues.

Our Department's researchers and mentors have been recognized for excellence in research and teaching. We have recipients of Canada Research Chairs, the McLaughlin Medal of the Royal Society of Canada, and the Pew Award.

The work in the Department is competitively funded by grants from national and international funding agencies, creating an exciting intellectual environment conducive to cutting-edge research on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of biological systems and disease.

The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). The writing part of this test is scored separately on a scale of 0-6. Read more about TOEFL (PBT).

  • Minimum required score:

The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

  • Applicants must hold a B.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in a discipline relevant to the proposed field of study, with an overall Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0/4.0, or a Grade Point Average of 3.2/4.0 within the last two full-time academic years.
  • All applicants must complete the Supervisor Confirmation Form to be considered for acceptance into our graduate studies program.
  • On the online application form, you must provide the names and e-mail addresses of at least two professors who are familiar with both your academic and laboratory work (and who will not be your prospective supervisors). McGill will contact these referees and invite them to upload references on your behalf. Letters must be from academic or other professional employers who can evaluate your potential for graduate studies and/or speak knowledgeably about your accomplishments. You must provide a valid institutional e-mail address for each referee (unfortunately Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc., will not be accepted).
  • All international applicants whose mother tongue is not English and
  1. have not completed an undergraduate or graduate degree from a recognized Canadian institution,
