Learning Informatics and Computation Engineering at FEUP was conceived as requiring a full five years integrated cycle of education, training and apprenticeship. This integrated cycle matches the implementation of the 1st and 2nd cycles of the Bologna Process and immediately confers the Master of Science academic degree.

Master in Master in Information Science

The Master on Information Science (MCI) is the result of adapting to the Bologna Process the Master on Information Management (MGI), that FEUP has been offering from 1997/98 to 2006/07. MCI is a joint initiative of the Engineering (FEUP) and Humanities (FLUP) faculties and aims at deepening the knowledge and competences of Information Science graduates towards a professional specialization as well as envisaging a research career.

The University of Coimbra and the Carnegie Mellon University offer jointly two advanced programs in Software Engineering: the Professional Program in Software Engineering (MSE) and the Master of Science and Information Technology – Software Engineering (MSIT-SE). These are advanced programs explicitly designed to educate the future leaders of industrial software engineering practice, training graduates for effectively managing teams, projects and processes, as well as large scale software development. The goal of the programs is to develop future leaders of industrial software engineering practice - the future chief engineers, head designers, principal technical officers of their companies.

The Master in Informatics Engineering is a two-year degree with 120 ECTS. The curriculum includes an organized set of curricular units corresponding to 70 ECTS plus a dissertation corresponding to 50 ECTS. The curricular units include both mandatory and optional units. The optional curricular units can be offered in thematic groups (e.g., the thematic group on Intelligent and Information Systems or the thematic group on Networking).
