The overarching theme of the work of this group is the characterization of mineral-water-organic matter reactions in surface and near-surface environments. As chemical reactions in these environments are often catalysed by microorganisms, we have developed a recent and expanding interest in geomicrobiology. Here, by combining the techniques of microbiology and molecular biology with physical, chemical and modelling approaches, we are focusing on the role microorganisms play or have played in key geological processes.

The research group is concerned with the evolution of depositional systems and landscape to structurally imposed constraints, and with diagenetic processes. Petroleum geoscience research is a growth area involving 3D seismic interpretation of departmental systems reservoir characterisation and outcrop modelling. The research is focused on integrated studies coupling sequence stratigraphy, structural geology and sedimentary geochemistry and is split 60:40 between outcrop/modelling work and subsurface studies. Our research incorporates all aspects of the coupled sedimentary basin - landscape system, from source to sink and from micro- to macro-scales.
