Arcada University of Applied Sciences was established in Helsinki in 1996. Arcada originates from three different institutions: The Swedish Commercial College, Swedish Institute of Technology, Helsinki and Helsinki Swedish College of Nursing and Health Care. Arcada University of Applied Sciences moved into the Arcada building in Arabianranta in 2004 and so created the foundation for one campus.
With some 2 400 degree students at our growing campus, we offer studies at both bachelor's and master's levels, as well as further studies and open studies, in a relaxed and charming international environment.
At Arcada we believe that there is more to studying than just attending courses and taking exams. We want you to develop your academic and professional skills, and discover your potential by actively participating in the varied activities of a dynamic community composed of students and staff from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.
Arcada provides an innovative environment with a focus on research-based innovation in the business and public sectors, and with a strong interaction between teaching and research.
At Arcada research is conducted within the following priority areas: culture, functional materials, business development and information analysis, and patient safety, health promotion and social inclusion. Regardless of the field, the starting point is the same – to identify the needs of the surrounding world and to assess how our research will have the greatest possible positive impact on society.
Our task is to give you an education that prepares you for expert positions in your field. You will therefore get useful contacts in the labour market whilst still studying, and for many students, these contacts and the traineeship periods which are part of the studies function as a springboard to their future careers.Did you know that those who have a degree from a university of applied sciences are very sought-after in the labour market? Most of our former students find jobs which correspond to their degrees within a year after leaving Arcada.
Many organisations offer scholarships or grants. Some of these might help you to study for a Master at Arcada University of Applied Sciences!
At Arcada you are never alone and there are a wide range of services to ensure that our students thrive in their studies and student life. You will e.g. have access to a programme director, your amanuensis, a tutoring teacher, study counsellors, a study psychologist, student affairs officers, an international coordinator and an integration coordinator as well as career guidance.
Neighbouring the Arcada building, our more than 500 student apartments are modern and have their own kitchens and bathrooms. Your visits to the laundry room are free of charge, of course. In the oldest building, which is a mere six-years-old, you can choose between one, two, three and four room apartments.
These homey and modern apartments are in constant demand, and there is one thing on which all students living on campus can agree: they get value for money. The prices are competitive, to say the least.
The prime task of Arcada library is to provide services for the students and staff of Arcada. In addition, it works as a library open to the public. The library's collections can be used in the library, and the e-material can also be accessed by Arcada's students and staff outside Arcada through the Nelli Portal.
You find modern computer rooms at your disposal in the Arcada building which you are allowed to use when they are not reserved for courses. Arcada provides Office 365 cloud services for all students as well as a wide range of digital tools to support your studies. Arcada's IT-support helps you with IT related issues and makes sure that everyone gets the IT support needed.
At Arcada you have a student nurse, psychologist as well as a student priest available.
The Arcada campus, built in 2004, is quite unique in Helsinki as it is a complete campus with the university of applied sciences, student housing and the student union house. The campus is perfectly situated to combine its own personal milieu with excellent transportation to the city centre and onwards.
It is a hundred metres to the Arcada building. This is the same distance as to the tram or bus that can take you to the centre of Helsinki in just 15 minutes. A hundred meters is also how far you have to walk to reach the Arabia shopping mall, where you can find food and clothes shops, a pharmacy and restaurants.
The beautiful Arabia beach is just behind the building. A gym, tennis courts and a football pitch are also nearby. The local jogging tracks are excellent and also allow you to admire cows and sheep in their meadows as you work out. In the winter, you don’t have to think twice about strapping on ice skates because the rink is just around the corner.
Arcada Student Union – ASK works for the interests of all Arcada students. ASK was founded in 1997. Since August 2005 the student unions in the Universities of Applied Sciences have had an official position and a legislated duty to promote student’s interests.
ASK has over 1000 members and supervise all Arcada students’ interest through representing students in decision-making bodies in Arcada, as well as though actively participating in the activities of SAMOK.
ASK is located in the Cor-house, which is the students’ own house. Here you can also find our Board and staff if you feel like dropping by and say hello.
Arcada is FINEEC audited (Finnish Education Evaluation Centre) and carry both the ECTS and Diploma Supplement labels.
Together with the ISIC Association and British Council IELTS, StudyPortals offers you the chance to receive up to £10000 to expand your horizon and study abroad. We want to ultimately encourage you to study abroad in order to experience and explore new countries, cultures and languages.
