It is SUMAS ’s policy to encourage the use of bicycles for short trips. A Velopass bike station for 7 bikes is installed in front of SUMAS building. Velopass is an interconnected system of bike stations available 24/7. Students can rent a bike from a particular station and return it either to the station where they rented it or to another one.
The headquarters of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Gland, Switzerland provides the perfect environment to study sustainability. The state-of-the-art complex sets a benchmark in sustainable construction, is certified MINERGIE ECO-P and aims at the highest level of US LEED certification, as well as incorporating a series of innovative green building techniques while operating within tight cost constraints.

Innovative features of the building include the use of rainwater for toilets and irrigation; heat recuperation from refrigerators to produce hot water; a 1 million CHF solar parc from Romande Energie Renouvelable that also provides energy back to the Swiss electricity grid; energy efficient lighting; local and recycled building materials; geothermal heating and a decentralized carbon dioxide controlled air supply system.
