South African Theological Seminary

Johannesburg, South Africa
The South African Theological Seminary (SATS) is a fully online, evangelical, distance education institution, based on 3 foundational principles, namely, Bible-based, Christ-centred and Spirit-led. It is fully accredited in English and French by the Council on Higher Education, all the way to the PhD level.

The South African Theological Seminary operates completely online and is able to offer its high quality, fully accredited programmes all over the world. Currently we have 2000 students in 87 countries with 140 staff members in 28 countries. Our highly qualified, friendly staff are regularly complimented for their excellence and prompt service delivery.

We are the only private, evangelical seminary in Africa which is accredited up to the PhD level in English and French. Our fees are low by international standards, without compromising quality in any way. Our alumni have often expressed praise for their journey with us.

We believe in partnering with like-minded groups, churches, institutions and organisations, because we know there is significant value in such collaboration. We have forged partnerships in many parts of the world, especially in countries which do not permit the accreditation of religious programs. We invest time in developing the relationship, and as a result, we have forged sound partnerships in many parts of the world.

We are a non-profit organisation and completely debt free.

Master's Programmes

Many organisations offer scholarships or grants. Some of these might help you to study for a Master at South African Theological Seminary!

Students can enrol any day of the year. They can also determine the pace of their progress some may follow a very intensive routine and finish their courses in record time, while others can only manage a few hours per week. Both coursework and full research programmes allow space to choose areas of specialisation and research methodology

SATS gives special attention to the process of your admission into our postgraduate programmes. This includes a discussion of the expectations and prior learning of each applicant, as well as an exploration of research options. The purpose of the latter, coordinated by Dr. Zoltan Erdey, senior academic advisor, is to identify a viable research concept before the student formally enrols. This service is provided free of charge and helps students to have a clear picture of the studies they want to undertake.

After enrolment, students opting for a structured programme start with the first course of their respective programmes, while thesis students will commence with Phase 2 of their thesis journey. This phase culminates in the submission of a formal research proposal, which serves as the roadmap for their thesis writing.

More than 80 dedicated and respected theologians from all over the world form part of the Postgraduate Faculty. Among them there is an impressive diversity in academic expertise, ministry experience and field of influence. The School strives to ensure that students are served by facilitators best suited to their specific talents and needs

Student Life

Because we operate completely online, students are not required to come to the campus. However, there are online forums where you will regularly communicate with your supervisor and your fellow students.

You are also able to access all the resources of the extensive theological library and journal collection

The South African Theological Seminary is accredited by the Council on Higher Education to offer the following programmes:

  • Higher Certificate in Christian Counselling
  • Higher Certificate in Christian Life
  • Bachelor of Theology
  • Bachelor of Theology Honours
  • Master of Theology
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Theology

In addition, we are permitted to offer postgraduate programs in any language.

Our accreditation and Department of Higher Education registration provide assurance that the quality of our programmes is of the highest standard. Our programmes are therefore nationally and internationally comparable and the credits earned with us are truly portable, i.e. they can be transferred to other accredited, registered institutions. The increasing number of international students confirms the acceptability of our programmes around the world.

Recently our MTh and PhD programmes were submitted to two of the most frequently used and highly recommended evaluators in the USA, namely the International Education Research Foundation, Inc. ( and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers International Education Services (, and both confirmed that these degrees represent attainment of a level of education comparable to the equivalent degrees from a regionally accredited university in the United States. Our degrees are also recognised by the German website which provides information about the evaluation of foreign qualifications.
