About

History

The University of Minnesota was founded as a preparatory school in 1851, seven years before the territory of Minnesota became a state. Financial problems forced the school to close during the Civil War, but with the help of Minneapolis entrepreneur John Sargent Pillsbury, it reopened in1867.

Research

Transportation research at the University of Minnesota covers the spectrum from basic to applied research, drawing on the many transportation-related disciplines within the University. The Center actively supports the formation of multidisciplinary research teams.

Student services

The safety of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors is incredibly important to all of us at the University of Minnesota, and the Twin Cities campus is among the safest in the country. Students can receive real-time safety alerts via text message by signing up for TXT-U, and alarm buttons and emergency phones are located throughout campus. Parking facilities, skyways, and tunnels are monitored 24 hours a day with the aid of security cameras, and campus escorts are available to bike and walk with you to and from campus locations and nearby neighborhoods.

In the heart of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus, Boynton Health Service provides primary and urgent care; mental health services; dental and eye clinics; a pharmacy; women's health care; physical and massage therapy; and health promotions such as flu shots and nutrition services.

Sports facilities

  • The Intramural program is a great way for members of the University community to engage in friendly competition. Members can compete in individual, partner or team events in a wide range of sports.
  • The Fitness program prides itself in providing resources for members to maintain healthy, active lifestyles. Both the Minneapolis University Recreation and Wellness Center and St. Paul Gymnasium contain state-of-the-art fitness equipment and have several services available to meet member's needs.

Student clubs

Our students come together to socialize and learn from each other in more than 800 student groups, from the Alpine Ski Team and the Black Student Union, to the Bass Fishing Team and the Capoeira Club. We also have an active Fraternity and Sorority community.

Accreditation

The five University of Minnesota campuses are accredited separately at the institutional level by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
