Growing Esteem is the University's strategy for achieving high regard and for making a distinctive contribution to society.The Triple Helix metaphor describes the character of the University and the importance of its core activities Research, Learning and teaching, and Engagement programs. These three strands of the helix are supported and enabled by our leadership and by our people, infrastructure, polices, planning, administration and resources.
The Triple Helix metaphor represents the tightly bound nature of our academic programs with each strand shaping and reinforcing the other.

Research, the first strand of Growing Esteems triple helix, is essential to the Universitys goal of becoming one of the finest universities in the world. The University of Melbourne is committed to being a comprehensive research-intensive university able to draw on cross-disciplinary excellence in response to major social, economic and environmental challenges.
To this end, the University has established a portfolio of Melbourne Research Institutes, drawing on the breadth of the Universitys research activity. Each of the six Institutes addresses a complex societal challenge of strategic importance. The Institutes foster connections within and external to the University, provide leadership in the pursuit of important solutions, and showcase the diverse research programs taking place across the University. The Institutes program will continue to expand, made possible by the Universitys great research strength and breath, as reflected annually in national research indicators.
The University will continue to evaluate and reassess its research capacity and the position of its disciplines, rewarding excellence and managing improvements where required. The University will also pursue improved government funding of research and seek to further diversify research funding sources.
