About

History

The original school, Brigham Young Academy, was established Oct. 16, 1875, on a little over one acre of land in what is now downtown Provo. In 1903, the name was officially changed to Brigham Young University. The university's academic development was signified by the inauguration of the school's first doctoral program in 1957.

Known for its academically minded and internationally experienced student body, its world-class teaching and its beautiful mountain location, BYU is also recognized for its extensive language programs, talented performing arts ensembles, outstanding sports programs.

Research

Because around 90% of BYUs population is undergraduate students, many of them have the rare opportunity to participate in hands-on researchresearch that would normally be reserved for graduate students.The students work, which often results in presentations, performances, and publications in academic journals, provides them with key credentials for graduate school admission or job placement.

Campus housing accommodations include two twin beds per room, bed and bath linen (twin bed sheets, pillow, pillow case, blanket, bath towel, washcloth, and bar of soap), and central bath facilities on each floor. Students who do not request a roommate will have one assigned.

The libraries provide information resources and services that support educational pursuits, promote information discovery, advance scholarship, nurture lifelong intellectual and spiritual growth.

ICT services

Internet access in on-campus housing is now delivered via a single network connection in each apartment. The location of the network jack varies depending on the apartment complex.

Sports facilities

The office of Extramural Sports strives to demonstrate the aspects of athletics that promote wholesome attitudes in participants and spectators; to enhance positive relationships with other institutions, alumni and the general public; and to ensure that high moral standards are always reflected in the conduct of athletes and coaches.

Student clubs

The LDS Student Association (LDSSA) is an organization which sponsors social, religious, and recreational activities for LDS college students and their friends. The organization provides a framework wherein students have access to all phases of the Church that affect their lives during the week.
