In 1885, the Wisconsin State Normal School opened for classes at 18th and Wells in downtown Milwaukee. Over the next 42 years, the Milwaukee state normal school saw seven different presidents, the addition ofmusic and liberal arts programs and rapid growth from an initial enrollment of 76.
More than 180 programs offer undergraduate, graduate, doctoral students the opportunity to specialize and refine, practice and perfect their research and practical skills.
UWM is one of the nation’s top 115 research universities as recognized by the Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education. That coveted status reflects the depth and breadth of our research across dozens of doctoral programs and more than 100 labs, institutes and centers. Our cutting-edge work transforms lives and fuels the region’s economy.
UWM students come to campus equipped with backpacks and briefcases, workout and business-casual attire, résumés and essays. They intern, co-op, independent study with more than 600 businesses, financial firms, health-care organizations, nonprofits, media and entertainment groups in the heart of Wisconsin’s commercial and cultural capital.
We offer a menu of affordable transportation resources to meet the needs of every UWM student – anywhere in southeastern Wisconsin.
Four thousand students isn’t a crowd. It’s a community big enough to accommodate every incoming freshman. Five convenient, connected and secure UWM residences welcome sophomore, junior and graduate students, too. Live where you learn: Students make friends easier, feel more connected to their college and do better academically when they live on campus.
Health is a lifetime process and you are the primary player. We'll be your partner in that process, providing treatment if you are ill or injured, but more important, assisting you in understanding your health needs and in learning to make healthy choices on a daily basis.
The living at UWM is as important, and vibrant, as the learning. From 15 NCAA Division I sports to a bustling and affordable university-inspired arts and entertainment scene there’s much to see and do when it’s time for a study break or celebration. Panther Pride is in full force year-round. UWM makes its home on a compact campus with big options.
Panther Pride is knowing you belong to a Division 1 university that enrolls 300 of the hardest-working college athletes in America. We boast Horizon League championship titles in men’s and women’s basketball, a top-ranked and nationally competitive women’s soccer team, and lay claim to the only D1 men’s baseball team in Wisconsin. Year-round athletics on campus and in nearby Milwaukee venues give every student opportunities to check out the hottest (most affordable) games in town.
