Halmstad University celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2008 as an independent university college with its own vice-chancellor. The first post-secondary degree courses began in 1973. Now the University has some 50 degree programmes, 14,500 students and 500 employees, including some 40 professors.

Student Life


There are several gyms in Halmstad, most of them offer special prices for students. At the University there is also a gym called Idrottscentrum. For more information regarding prices and opening hours contact the Student Union.


Apart from the University Library, Halmstad has a city library located in the city centre on Axel Olssons gata 1 by the river Nissan. Here you can borrow books, language courses, dictionaries, music and films. You can also read newspapers and magazines. You must always have your library card and your PIN code in order to use the librarys services.


Various shops and supermarkets can be found in and around the town centre of Halmstad. They are usually open 7 days a week and offer a broad selection of foods and provisions. Among the cheaper stores are ICA Maxi close to Halmstad University and Willys at Eurostop.
