With half of a century of excellence in design education. The School launched MA in Design in 1990s, and Master of Design in 2000s. MDes further expanded to offer specialisms in Design Practices, Design Strategies, Interaction Design, Urban Environments Design and the latest addition, International Design and Business Management in 2013.
PolyU Design nurtures nearly 1,400 students yearly in a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with some 50 of them being PhD students. The School provides a high level, well equipped environment that includes significant research infrastructure with eight laboratories and a variety of first class technical workshops in the Jockey Club Innovation Tower, a landmark building designed by Zaha Hadid (1950-2016). The School believes new premises drives new thinking. That is why the School has launched the Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation, the first of its kind in Asia, to actively foster new approaches and new fields of design expertise.
PolyU Design is actively engaged in applied research and consultancy support for industry throughout Asia. Research has been a cornerstone of the School since the early 1990s. Jockey Club Innovation Tower, the home of PolyU Design, provides advanced facilities for teaching and learning, as well as ample exhibition and collaboration spaces that are positioned to attract deserved attention to our students work.
Studios are where design students study and nurture their creativity. Our teaching labs and studios feature hardware that is custom-built to accommodate high-end graphics and multimedia content development. Fully equipped modeling workshops allow students to have conceptual and physical space to investigate and experiment with materials, tools, processes and ideas.
Taught postgraduate students arrange their own accommodation off-campus, or apply for Off-campus Housing arranged by PolyU Student Affairs Office (SAO) on a self-financing basis. The Library actively supports the University’s mission by providing integrated and timely access to high quality scholarly resources, an inspiring environment for intellectual growth and discovery, with responsive and outreaching services delivered by knowledgeable and innovative staff.
Network Access - Wireless Service provides PolyU students with wireless network access on and off campus, including all the eight universities in Hong Kong, oversea universities under eduroam (world-wide joint-universities initiative) and thousands of hotspots at public places in Hong Kong with local wireless service providers including Y5ZONE and PCCW.
The University Health Service (UHS) provides a comprehensive range of primary health care for all full-time students. Student dental services are currently provided by Bayley and Jackson Dental Surgeons Limited (B&J) to full-time students at the Campus Student Dental Clinic. The University has a basic insurance coverage for students for joining PolyU activities during their stay in Hong Kong.
The University campus is strategically located in Hung Hom, Kowloon, on a 9.46-hectare site adjacent to the Cross Harbour Tunnel. In addition to classrooms, laboratories and other academic facilities, the campus offers sport, recreational facilities and other facilities including multi-purpose auditorium, Industrial Centre and language learning centres. A full range of campus services including restaurants, bookstore and banks are also provided.
Sports facilities in PolyU include: The Shaw Sports Complex, Fong Shu Chuen Hall, Kwong On Jubilee Sports Centre and Keith Legg Sports Field and Michael Clinton Swimming Pool, for these activities: badminton, basketball , fitness, golf practice, squash, table tennis, tennis (outdoor/ indoor), swimming, volleyball and others.
