History

When Wichita State first opened its doors in 1895 students rode horses to class, telegraph machines were cutting-edge technology, and Wichita had only been a city for roughly 25 years.Today, the university continues to change to reflect the world around it, finding new ways to keep future generations of Shockers one step ahead of the competition.

Services

Student services

The Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded program through the U.S. Department of Education. The program is funded to provide services to students from first generation and limited income families as well as students with disabilities. The primary goal of SSS is to help transition, retain and graduate college students. The program provides a variety of academic support services that include individualized tutoring, success skill development, course planning and advising.

Housing services

Living on campus at Wichita State means easy access to absolutely everything on campus, including hundreds of new friends. It also means free cable, free high-speed Web access, TV lounges, game rooms, computer labs and basketball courts. Oh, yeah, and laundry facilities. And suite-style bathrooms.

The nurses and physicians at Student Health Services provide medical care and treatment for ill and injured students. Additional services include health and wellness education, nutrition counseling, annual exams and limited pharmacy services.

Sports facilities

On-campus recreation is a great way to burn a few calories, meet cool people and unwind after class.

The Heskett Center and Rhatigan Student Center are home to everything from rock climbing and Kung Fu to billiards and bowling. Students can join a sports club or compete in intramurals – play racquetball, badminton and basketball – or get buff in the weight room.
