About

History

Appalachian was founded in 1899. The pioneering spirit necessary to overcome the mountains’ hardships quickly characterized the institution, giving Appalachian a special niche in higher education that continues today. After more than a century, students still feel the pull of this unique place to transform their lives.

Appalachian State University, located in Boone, North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, prepares students to lead purposeful lives as engaged global citizens who understand their responsibilities in creating a sustainable future for all. It offers more than 150 undergraduate and graduate majors. It is one of 16 universities in the University of North Carolina system.

The Career Development Center empowers students and alumni, as active participants, to select and develop careers consistent with their values, interests, abilities, experiences, and education. Through career exploration and experiential opportunities, students are motivated to expand their knowledge of themselves and their skills relevant to the global economy and community. Housing services

Options for on-campus housing:

  • Students entering Appalachian as new freshmen are required to live on campus and are guaranteed housing.
  • Transfer students are not guaranteed on-campus housing.
  • Current Appalachian students who were either not eligible (i.e., off-campus students) or not able to apply or select a room during the Housing Reapplication process can submit an application and be placed on the Housing Waitlist.
  • If you are taking summer classes and would like to live on campus during either the Summer 1, Summer 2, or both summer sessions, please visit the Housing Management System.

ICT services

ASU : ITS continues to make security one of our top priorities, and we encourage you to set up connections to our Secure WiFi Network for all devices you use to connect to the Internet. Each device must be registered in order to connect to the Secure ASU Network. ASU-Visitor : ASU-Visitor is intended for casual University visitor wireless access only.

Medical services

Student health and safety is our Chancellor’s top priority. In a recent nationwide survey, 95% of students indicated they believe something should be done if they witnessed someone in a risky situation.

Sports facilities

More than 450 student-athletes compete in 20 NCAA Division I varsity sports at Appalachian, and dedicated fans love to cheer on the Mountaineers. Appalachian joined the Sun Belt Conference in July 2014, after dominating the Southern Conference for more than 40 years.
