The University of Memphis was founded under the auspices of the General Education Bill, enacted by the Tennessee Legislature in 1909. Known originally as West Tennessee State Normal School, the institution opened its doors in 1912, with Dr. Seymour A. Mynders as president.Today, the University of Memphis is one of Tennessee's three comprehensive doctoral- extensive institutions of higher learning.

Memphis Research Consortium (MRC) promotes collaboration among The University of Memphis, The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the medical device industry, and Memphis hospitals.The Office for the Vice President for Research supports University of Memphis faculty's scholarship of discovery and innovation across our campuses. We work to promote research and creative activities by focusing on interdisciplinary scholarship, facilitating partnerships from local to international, and enabling our faculty to move the products of their work from the laboratory, classroom, field and studio to the community.

Offering students the perfect collegiate setting on 57 acres in midtown Jackson, UofM Lambuth is classified as an arboretum and displays year-round beauty. In addition to over 20 undergraduate majors and minors, students can also obtain a variety of master's or doctorate degrees.
And with 400 student-athletes competing in 19 different intercollegiate sports, there's a lot of room for doing. The UofM is a charter member of the American Athletic Conference and our athletic programs compete at the highest level as an NCAA Division I institution. It's the south, so athletics are big. But this is also Memphis, so athletics bring us together to be proud, eat some barbeque and have some good times.
