About

History

The University's foundation stone was laid by King George V on 19 July 1920 and 89 students (including eight female students) enrolled that same year. By 1960 a large-scale development programme was underway that would see the construction of new halls of residence, the Maths and Science Tower, and College House (later Fulton House). In 2009 work commenced on a second Institute of Life Science.

Research

Research is at the heart of Swansea University's vision and plays an important role in many of the policy challenges set out in our Strategic Plan and those of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government.

Each of the University's six academic Colleges has an associated Director of Research responsible for developing and leading the implementation of the research strategy for the College.The big challenges of today do not respect the artificial boundaries between traditional disciplines, which is why Swansea University's campus environment provides an ideal environment for multidisciplinary research to flourish.

Student services

Swansea University offers a range of international scholarships to help the most talented and ambitious students to reach their potential. We are proud to support the Chevening Scholarship Programme and we are honoured to be part of the Santander Network of Universities.

Housing services

We have our own Letting agency, Student Accommodation Services, also known as SAS Lettings: a partnership with the Students' Union. At our housing event SAS staff and Students' Union officers can offer advice on student housing and help you in your search.If you have made an application for accommodation and In the event that our accommodation is full we will hold a Housing Fair which will enable you to meet other students, form a group and look for accommodaiton before you start at University.

Library services

Swansea University Libraries provide high-quality information services for all students and staff, as well as the public, constantly developing these services to support the University's learning, teaching, research and corporate activities.

Library locations include the Library and Information Centre at Singleton Park, Bay Library, South Wales Miners' Library and St. David's Park Library.

ICT services

Research and teaching capacity doubled when the science and innovation Bay Campus opened in 2015. And in 2018 the £31 million Computational Foundry opens there, housing more than 150 computer science researchers.

Medical services

When you travel abroad as a student on official Swansea University business you are entitled to use the University's comprehensive travel insurance policy if you so wish. The policy covers the period from the time that you leave your normal place of residence immediately before the start of your course until the journey home immediately after your course has finished.

Campus life

The main student areas in Swansea are next to the Singleton Park Campus in Brynmill, Uplands and Sketty.There are pubs, shops, restaurants and takeaways within easy walking distance. These areas are a 5-15 minute walk to the University and are full of student houses.Safe to say, if you’re living in a student house, not only your flatmates, but your neighbours will be students too.

Student clubs

Our Students' Union supports over 80 societies.Swansea University has a strong campus-based student community. From visual arts to poker; real ale to gospel, the Students' Union most likely has the perfect society for you - and if it doesn't, the Union makes it easy for you to start your own! Joining a club or society is a great way to meet like-minded people and make new friends. It can also can give you valuable transferable skills for gaining future employment - especially if you take a lead role in the running of the group.

Accreditation

ELTS is accredited by BALEAP and the British Council plus is also a member of a number of important professional organisations linked to English Language Teaching. Our staff regularly attend training events and a number are speakers at conferences and professional interest meetings. We are also very proud to be part of a university which in 2014 was voted by students as the University of the Year.
