About

History

The Hanken School of Economics is a triple accredited Finnish business school located in Helsinkiand Vaasa, Finland. The school was founded in 1909 under the name Högre Svenska Handelsläroverket and was given its current name in 1927. This makes Hanken one of the oldest business schools in the Nordics and today it is the only stand-alone business school in Finland.

The education at Hanken is internationally well-known and appreciated. You can choose programmes on all levels, from Bachelor to PhD. With the research as the foundation for our teaching, we represent the Nordic type of business school. We take pride in being at the forefront of research in Economics, Finance, Management and Organisation, and Marketing.

Research

Hanken advances new knowledge in business and society through research activities characterised by academic excellence and corporate world relevance. It is ranked 5th globally on research and research liaisons by UMultirank. As Hanken represents the Nordic type and is a research intensive business school all teaching is based on the latest research. This includes the full range of courses and educational programmes they offer, especially their PhD Programme.

Services

Student services

All master's students at Hanken become member of the Student union. The Student union membership and student card give you access to a number of discounts and benefits (trains, buses, students restaurants etc). You are also are entitled to use the full range of services of the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS). If you are into sports you might want to have a look at what's on offer at Unisport.

Housing services

Hanken provides you with information and useful tips regarding housing. All degree students at Hanken are, however, responsible for arranging their accommodation themselves. Students in Helsinki can often get student housing through HOAS, the Foundation for Student Housing in the Helsinki Region. Hanken has a limited number of rooms /studio apartments for international students to offer via HOAS. In Vaasa, the students can usually get studenthousing through the Student Housing Foundation in Vaasa, VOAS.

Library services

The library at Hanken is available to your studying, the personnel supports you and teaches you information retrieval, not to mention the book collection and on-line journals made available to you through the library services. Many of the library services are available to you 24/7

ICT services

Hanken provides a number of IT-services for you as a student or Hanken faculty or staff. Many services are only available for you after login with Hanken user-id and password. The right to a user-id you have as a registered student registered for the semester, or as an employee.

Campus life

Today Hanken is the only stand alone business school in Finland. They are located in Helsinki and Vaasa. Helsinki, the capital of Finland with a population of approximately 500 000, is big enough to have everything you may want or need, yet small enough to easily find your way. It has great local transportation and you can reach most places on bike. Helsinki is located on the Southern coast of Finland well connected by rail and sea to both Sweden, the Baltics and Russia.Vaasa is, in proportion to Finland's population, the second largest student city in the country. Statistically, every fifth person in Vaasa is a student. Vaasa has a beautiful campus area, where most of the universities are situated, with an interesting architecture and a waterfront park right next to the sea.

Sports facilities

As a Hanken student you can take an opportunity to join UniSport – a sport club for the wholestudent community for the Greater Helsinki. As a student you will have a possibility to buy acard for the student price and enjoy both gym and group training.  

Student clubs

The Student Union of Hanken School of Economics, SHS, was founded in 1909. It is the home of student life at Hanken and but also the organisation that looks after all student inerests. It hosts a number of committees and clubs, ranging from the Sports Committee to Hanken Entrepreneurship Society. The union is today an independent public juridical entity, regulated by the decree on students’ unions.

Accreditation

Hanken was ranked by Financial TImes in 2015.

Hanken has been EQUIS accredited since 2000 and the Hanken Executive MBA Programme was awarded the AMBA accreditation in 2008. In 2015 Hanken received the AACSB accreditation making it one of the top 1% of business schools that have obtained all three international business school accreditations.
