Positioned between traditional universities and business and industry, they combine the academic rigour and long-term perspective of a university with the commercial and business focus of industry. Cranfield operates in a global context. Competitive advantage is based, primarily, upon three characteristics:
* focus upon sectors, private, public and charitable, rather than traditional academic disciplines: hence all Schools embrace staff from a wide range of academic disciplines
* concern for and delight in the practical outcome of our work
* willingness to address defence.
They educate students at postgraduate level on both professional development and degree-awarding courses; they come either to enhance an already chosen career, or to move to a new one.
They bring a range of multidisciplinary skills to bear in addressing a number of fields including:
* Security and defence
They generate and transform knowledge, translating it to the benefit of society. Their partners, from micro SMEs to the largest blue-chip multinationals, from governments across the world to NGOs and charities, say this is what they value about Cranfield.
Innovation is part of Cranfields corporate DNA, evolved over 60 years of commitment to this agenda.
Work informs policy for governments and produces new technologies and products for the world of commerce. The University draws on this pool of research and consultancy to provide our students with a distinctive real-world learning environment, allowing them to develop as professionals and transfer their new knowledge to the global economy. This has always been the Cranfield way but it has never been more important than in todays world.
