The Libera Università Maria Ss. Assunta (LUMSA) is a private Italian Catholic university, founded in 1939 as the Istituto Superiore di Magistero “Maria Ss. Assunta”. LUMSA is an accredited university which enjoys institutional autonomy in all academic, administrative and policy matters. It awards degrees and diplomas which are equivalent to those of public universities.

In 1939 the principles of cultural pluralism, academic freedom and institutional autonomy as, recognised in the Italian Constitution, inspiredLuigia Tincani to establish an institution of higher learning devoted to the pursuit of knowledge and dissemination of truth. In 2011 the University underwent a reorganisation and new departments were established.


The University Centre for Research and Internationalisation is responsible for the promotion and support of research activities, academic collaboration and the internationalization of the University, including teaching staff and students working abroad.


LUMSA graduate employment office: this service is offered to LUMSA university graduates and the office operates in the ambit of ministerial projects in close contact with Companies and Organizations to create work opportunities, targeted training activities and the possible repetition of particularly significant experiences. Support is given to graduates up to 12 months after graduation.

Student services

The International Relations Office is in charge of handling the University’s external relations as well as projecting and promoting this type of activity in coordination with distinct faculty of the University and with other entities and institutions.

Housing services

LUMSA has a new counter service: the LUMSA Accommodation Service, a new service to help students who do not live in Rome to find appropriate accommodation. The advice given covers everything from the type of accommodation available to legal meaning of the tenancy agreement.The LUMSA Accommodation Service is completely FREE.

Library services

The University Library System: includes the libraries in the different LUMSA buildings and it allows the consultation and the borrowing of books for study reasons. Connected to the network URBS, the system allows the consultation of the databases of the academies and foreign research centres present in Rome.

ICT services

Faculty computer-science classrooms: Every faculty has a computer-science classroom, freely open to the students on established weekly hours. There is an internet connection to surf the web and to manage one's mail-box.

WI-FI Wireless Area: The LUMSA offers its students a wireless internet connection. The service is free and is available in certain covered areas by using hot spot.

Medical services

Counselling: It is a free service offered by the Specialization School in Psychotherapy “Humanitas”. It aims at providing LUMSA students with professional psychological assistance in order to overcome difficult situations which otherwise produce negative effects in terms of personal wellness, adaptation to the university environment and progress in one's studies.

It is enjoyable and intellectually stimulating to attend a university in the heart of Rome, a town with one of the richest historical and cultural heritages in the world. There are four University buildings, a few minutes’ walk from each other and easily accessible by public transport. LUMSA has also campuses in the towns of Palermo and Taranto.
