Sciences Po was founded in 1872 in response to the political and moral crisis that gripped France in the aftermath of the 1870 Franco-Prussian War. The intention was to educate a new elite, capable of understanding complex issues, through a cross-disciplinary approach and an international perspective. Today, this ambition is still at the heart of our educational approach.

Sciences Po offers an in-depth education in five social science disciplines: economics, law, history, sociology and political science. In order to train well-rounded professionals, professors at Sciences Po always adopt a cross-disciplinary approach and an international perspective. The undergraduate curriculum consists of a three-year course of study in the social sciences. It includes two years on a multicultural campus in France and one year abroad at one of our 470 partner universities. It leads to a Bachelor‘s degree. At the graduate level, our seven schools offer two-year Master’s degree programmes and PhD programmes.

Research at Sciences Po covers a wide range of topics including social policy, inequality, education, democracy, urban development, globalisation and public health. One of Sciences Po’s key objectives is to make a significant contribution to methodological, epistemological and theoretical advances in five main disciplines: law, economics, history, political science and sociology. Sciences Po ranks fourth internationally for politics and international studies (2017 QS ranking) and is the highest ranked institution in France in this discipline.
