The Hertie School was founded as a private, non-profit institution in 2003 by the Hertie Foundation and was established as one of the first professional schools for public policy in Germany. As an ambassador of good governance, the Hertie School has become a hub for top scholars and researchers, as well as experts and representatives from the spheres of politics, business and civil society.

As a professional school for public policy, the Hertie School gives students several opportunities to apply what they are learning and begin building a professional network.
MPP and MIA Students are expected to complete a summer internship between their first and second year of study. For students who want even more professional experience, the School offers a professional year between the first and second year of the programme. For internships and the professional year, the School has established relationships with a range of institutions to help students find a position.
The Hertie School also invites relevant professionals including alumni to its professional perspectives lecture series.

In Germany, every student studying at a state-recognised higher education institution is required by law to have health insurance. Students can direct all questions regarding health insurance to the Student Affairs Team.
The Hertie School campus is situated in the center of Berlin in the immediate neighborhood of the German parliament, ministries, think-tanks, consulting agencies, and international organizations.
The campus has a cafeteria, a library, a computer lab, and a student kitchen. Study and reading rooms are available for group projects and individual research sessions.
The Hertie School organizes countless events each semester: public lectures and panel discussions on today’s biggest policy issues and their implications, the professional perspectives lecture series on possible career paths, and many more informal cultural and social events, such as the semester opening party or the country presentation series.
Since the inception of the Hertie School of Governance in 2003, student participation in the affairs of the School was provided for in the articles of incorporation and organized by study programme and class year.The Hertie School Student Association (HSA), the official student association at the Hertie School of Governance, is an important part of the Hertie School community and involved in many different areas, such as institutional decision-making and supporting the many student-run clubs and activities.
