The Institut d’Etudes Européennes (IEE-ULB) was born just a few years after the European Union itself at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Conceived as a centre of education and research, with a commitment to public debate, the IEE-ULB quickly opened itself up to the world and has an ongoing cooperation with more than 100 academic partners.
The IEE-ULB is an international research institute at the heart of Europe that focuses on all dimensions of European studies and separates from others by an innovative interdisciplinary approach. We thrive in the challenge of combining research, teaching and professionalization, and promote bilingual education in English and French (all programs are bilingual except from our Executive Master, taught fully in English). Our success emanates from three strategic choices: internationalization (staff and student body), interaction with EU institutions (engaging European decision-makers and practitioners with teaching, research and public debate) and coherence of our research agenda and teaching offer.
As a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, the IEE-ULB is a recognized hub of expertise in European affairs and has a proven track record in doctoral training. Its 36 associate academic lectures and over 42 affiliated researchers are here to prove it.For over 50 years, the IEE-ULB has been at the forefront of the study of EU institutions. Understanding them requires a global vision and a concentric approach, deployed along 4 transversal research themes grouping researchers focused on law, economics, history and political science:
