In 1960 legislation was signed establishing Sonoma State College. It first opened to 274 students in Fall 1961 in leased buildings in Rohnert Park. The move to its permanent site of 215 acres took place in 1966, upon completion of Stevenson and Darwin Halls for classrooms.
The university offers selected professional and graduate programs leading to master's degrees, teaching credentials, and certificates in various career fields. These programs respond to regional and state needs within the academic, business, education and professional communities.
The Office of Reporting and Analytics is the primary source of statistical information for Sonoma State University. Our office is responsible for managing campus data, conducting research, and presenting findings to advance strategic university planning and decision making. In addition, Reporting and Analytics supplies information to the Sonoma State campus community, the California State University system, external publications, and other interested organizations. We are committed to timely, high-quality work accomplished with teamwork, innovation, and reliability.
Sonoma State Career Services provides comprehensive career services to students through career development, experiential learning, resume development, on-campus recruitment and employer networking. We serve as the bridge between Sonoma State’s college experience and employment or graduate school, helping students make the connection between what they have learned and how they may apply the framework into the world of work. Sonoma State University offers over 20 competitive sport clubs. Sport clubs are student organized and operated and provide students with an opportunity to play a sport in a fun, yet competitive environment. All skill levels are welcome!

Sonoma State University is fully accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). In addition, individual program accreditations have been granted by the American Chemical Society, the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), the Accrediting Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), the National Association for Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), and the Association to Advance Colleges and Schools of Business. Programs in SSU's School of Education are approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
