The HafenCity University Hamburg is the University Of The Built Environment And Metropolitan Development (HCU). The education and research at the HCU Hamburg are aimed at contemplating and concretising what the future of metropolitan areas could and should look like. Coping with this future will, however, require a systematic interdisciplinary as well as a transdisciplinary approach.

About

History

The HafenCity University Hamburg — University of the Built Environment and Metropolitan Development) (HCU Hamburg) — was founded by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg on January 1, 2006 as a merger of four departments from three Hamburg universities.

Education

  • Architecture, Civil Engineering, Geomatics, Urban Planning – in each case as a Bachelor’s degree with the option to continue studying to obtain a Master’s degree
  • Metropolitan Culture – as a Bachelor programme
  • Urban Design and Resource Efficiency in Architecture and Planning (REAP) – as interdisciplinary Master’s degrees
  • Fachübergreifende Studienangebote, cross-curricular Programme, an inter- and transdisciplinary programme, complements the curriculum of the individual study programms at the HCU.

Research

The HCU is research- led . The complex challenges of the urban environment in the 21st century require an exploratory attitude . The HCU therefore sees itself as a laboratory for the future of the metropolis , asked taught in less predetermined solutions as questions , seeking answers and ways are being tested .

Services

Student services

The International Office advises foreign HCU students and HCU students planning to study in another country. We also inform about internship abroad . In addition, the International Office numerous contacts with universities and organizations that further information on the topics of study and placement abroad or to finance the stay abroad usually can give .

Library services

With approximately 76,000 books and magazines, a growing range of electronic journals and e-books, the main task of our library is supplying the HafenCity University with literature and information. It is also open to all citizens of the Hamburg region.

ICT services

Among IT and media for information , rates and contact details of the areas library , IT and Cartography and the city lab .

Medical services

The health insurance companies can also issue a certificate, which is valid for the duration of your specific course, if the obligation as a student to take out insurance should in the future no longer be applicable due to exceeding the number of course semesters or the age limit or if you are exempt from insurance or have requested to be exempted from the obligation to take out insurance.

Student clubs

The interests of the students are represented at the HCU on different levels. The students in the degree programmes are organised into student representative bodies. At the highest level of the overall university, there is the Student Parliament (StuPa) and the General Student Council (Asta).
