About

History

Hamburg University of Applied Sciences was founded in 1970 as the Fachhochschule Hamburg but it looks back on a long tradition, with roots going back to the 18th century. Four engineering schools and six vocational schools were brought together with the goal to develop a new form of higher education.

Education

Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg) is one of the largest of its kind in Germany and within our four faculties we offer a wide range of Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in engineering, IT, life sciences, design and media as well as business and social sciences. In teaching we focus on applied sciences, giving our students a practical insight into their fields of study through projects, lab work, internships and theses in industry.

Research

HAW Hamburg focuses on innovative and applied research for sustainable solutions often in close cooperation with industry. To draw together expertise from across the university and to highlight the innovation clusters for external partners HAW Hamburg has defined four strategic research areas. These pages give a brief overview of the strategic areas and their competence centres, the research groups at the HAW Hamburg and our Research & Technology Transfer Centres.

Services

Housing services

Finding accommodation in Hamburg is difficult. We therefore recommend that you start looking for a place to live in good time. If you have friends or relatives in Hamburg ask them to help.

Most of the halls of residence in Hamburg are run by the Studierendenwerk Hamburg and offer affordable accommodation for students. Generally, students have their own room in an apartment which they share with other students - bathroom and kitchen are shared. The monthly rent for a room in hall starts at roughly 220 Euro [including heating, water and electricity].

Medical services

Sometimes problems or situations can get too big to handle alone and it is important to have someone to turn to in confidence. In our Students Service Centre we have trained psychologists that you can talk to and who will help you find a solution to your problem.
