In October 1998, The regional newspaper "Nordlys" publishes an op-ed by retired University Vice-Chancellor Ole D. Mjøs. He advocates establishing peace, peace research, conflict resolution and human rights studies at the University of Tromsø (UiT).


12000 students and 2700 staff study and work at the University of Tromsø. Teaching is research-based. UiT´s seven faculties offer, in spite of a dedication to Northern issues, a broad range of study programmes. The academic community in Tromsø is highly international. More than 20% of the academic staff and 10% of the student body are from abroad. The University offers more than 20 English taught master´s degree programmes, and all faculties offer English taught courses at both bachelor’s and master’s level.


The university is part of the FRAM – High North Research Centre for Climate and the Environment (Fram Centre) in Tromsø. Every January the international conference Arctic Frontiers invites researchers, politicians and business representatives to discuss Arctic issues across disciplinary borders. The Secretariat of the Arctic Council is located at the Fram Centre. Researchers from the University and Fram Center are involved in several international programmes of the Arctic Council.

Student services

The Student Welfare Organisation offers student housing, counselling, catering, kindergardens and sports facilities. Each semester the International Office arranges an Introductory programme for new international students securing a good start and social integration into the UiT community. International student advisers at the faculties assist the international students regarding their studies abroad. The International Student Union arranges events throughout the semesters and cooperates regularly with the International Office.

Housing services

The Housing Department at the Arctic Student Organization of Norway (Samskipnaden) offers rental of rooms and flats to students at UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø, Alta, Hammerfest, Harstad and Longyearbyen.

Due to the large number of students arriving each semester, The Arctic Student Welfare Organization of Norway cannot guarantee to meet all wishes regarding the location of your room. Students who move into a student hostel cannot be guaranteed to change accommodation due to long waiting lists.The rooms are equipped with basic furniture and share some common facilities: kitchen, bathrooms, toilets, storage rooms and laundry.

You will get access to your own user account for the University of Tromsø after arrival. More information and help concerning the activation of your account will be given during the Introductory Programme. If you need internet access before this you can have free access at the university library and the public library in the city center.
