University of Eastern Finland

Joensuu, Finland
At UEF, interdisciplinarity is not something they do, it's who they are. They seek to be among the world's best when it comes to academic learning environments and offer first-class education that is bound to make a difference. They are one of the largest universities in Finland, and home to approximately 15,000 students and 2,800 members of staff.

The preparations for the establishment of the University of Eastern Finland began in 2007, when the University Senates of the University of Joensuu and the University of Kuopio approved the project to form a federal university. The decision was rooted in the universities' desire to obtain the right to confer degrees in the field of economics and business administration.

UEF is a multidisciplinary university, which offers teaching in more than 100 major subjects. The key interdisciplinary research areas are built around four global challenges: Ageing, lifestyles and health; Learning in a digitised society; Cultural encounters, mobilities and borders; and Environmental change and sufficiency of natural resources. In addition to a high standard of teaching, they offer the students a modern study environment, which is under constant development. Student well-being is among their primary concerns. They have extensive international relations and are involved in several international networks. .

  • The Tenure Track is transparent and it supports the career development of accomplished researchers. In principle, members of the UEF teaching and research staff have extensive opportunities to enter the Tenure Track; however, in practice, only a limited number of highly accomplished researchers will be offered the possibility to enter it. Positions can be opened at different levels of the Tenure Track and it is possible to define, for example, an associate professor position as the entry level.

Sports facilities

The University of Eastern Finland offers its staff and students the opportunity to utilise sports services with the intent of increasing general well-being.The Student Union aims to provide its members with fun experiences and the pure joy of exercise. It is not our intent to turn our members into serious athletes, but to encourage them to spontaneously partake in sports activities. The Student Union aims to achieve this by organising events such as the bi-annual sports afternoon, where members are given the opportunity to try out a variety of sports that suit various individual skills and tastes.

Student clubs

Coriolis is an active student organisation for students of Geography and Human Geography. The organisation was founded in 1986, and by organising various events it has brought joy not only to the students of Geography but also to other Joensuu campus students.Echo is the English students’ association in UEF. We organize different kinds of fun events more or less related to the English speaking culture and also help our students with any and all problems concerning studying in UEF. Every English student is welcome to join Echo.
