About

History

  • Gothenburg is situated on the west coast of Sweden and is the largest port in Scandinavia; thus the city has become a natural centre for marine research. This research includes marine chemistry, oceanography and various biological disciplines.
  • To strengthen the marine profile, the Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment was established at the University of Gothenburg in 2008.

Student services

The Faculty Office of Science provides support to the faculty board, faculty management and the activities within departments and infrastructures. The mission of the office is to provide support for research, education and cooperation conducted within the Faculty of Science.. The office is a specialist function whose tasks include for example:

There are eight libraries, two learning centres, and one National resource library (KvinnSam) which together constitute Gothenburg University Library.

Medical services

Health care Akademihlsan

You can turn to Akademihlsan with any health problems you may have during your studies. Akademihlsan is the students occupational health service. It acts as a complement to other health and medical services. It is free for students.

Student Life

Campus life

Some of the biology departments are located near the Sahlgrenska Academy, an arrangement that provides a favourable base for the life sciences. In this area, the Faculty of Science and the Sahlgrenska Academy work together to stimulate common areas, such as cell and molecular biology. There are modern and well-equipped facilities for research in natural sciences and biotechnology at the Lundberg Laboratory.

There are two student fitness centres in Gothenburg, with a wide range of activities, such as aerobics, ball sports, gym, dancing, water aerobics, outdoor pursuits, and a variety of courses. As a student you are entitled to a student discount membership.

Accreditation

The environmental management system at the Faculty of Science was certified in accordance with the international standard ISO 14001 in November 2005.
