The Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium (ITM) is one of the world's leading institutes for training, research and assistance in tropical medicine and health care in developing countries.
It started its activities in Brussels in 1906, and has been based in its distinctive buildings in Antwerp since 1931. Since then it has carried the name of Prince Leopold, the later King Leopold III. Today, it works with its partners all over the world towards a common goal of "Health Care for All". It houses five scientific departments, a travel clinic, a specialised library and various support services, and employs some 340 staff.
The ITM is an inter-university but autonomous post-graduate institute for specialised training, research and services provision. It is supervised by a Board of Governors on which all concerned universities and authorities are represented. The ITM draws its academic recognition and core funding from the Ministry of Education of the Flemish Community in Belgium.
On behalf of the Belgian Directorate-General for Development Cooperation (DGDC), it carries out a wide-ranging international programme of capacity strengthening in the South. For the Belgian Ministries of Public Health and Social Affairs it has the role of national reference centre for tropical diseases and as regional reference centre for the diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS. Internationally, the ITM participates in activities and collaborations all over the world.
The Library of the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp mainly specialises in literature on the following subjects:
