The extremely sophisticated and competitive nature of organisations today has forced Business Schools to rethink the way they do and teach management, and the way they impact business and societies at large.
ISCTE Business School (IBS) plays a decisive role in preparing highly qualified managers for the local industry. As the School looks to its future in contributing to management knowledge and practice, and preparing ethically responsible managers and leaders to impact organisations in a globalised world, I feel privileged to have set in motion several changes that build on previous achievements and will allow IBS to deliver graduates consistent with its mission.
IBS is in the process of consolidating its position as one of the few Portuguese Business Schools offering first and second cycle programmes in the main functional areas of management; this distinguishing feature is undoubtedly due to the faculty’s long-standing leadership in fundamental, applied and interdisciplinary research.
The teaching model that will be fostered rests on four main pillars: “Critical Thinking Skills”, “Analytical Skills”, “Technological Skills” and “Soft Skills”. The proximity between students and faculty, a unique feature of IBS culture, will facilitate the consolidation of the skills during students’ academic and professional lives.
The School maintains strong ties with the corporate world through the Career Services that offers mentoring programmes for undergraduate and master students, internship and job opportunities through the Career Forum, Career Week, Company Open Days and IBS Networking. The School also places great emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship through business plan courses offered in undergraduate and master programmes, which benefit significantly from the experience of its faculty engaged in the MIT-ISCTE Venture Competition.
Students will be able to make meaningful impact in a globalized world only if they are extremely well prepared to address key challenges facing modern organisations, share experiences in a cosmopolitan setting and build worldwide networks. At IBS, students are exposed to curricular contents that have a global dimension, and share experiences and build their networks with faculty with significant international exposure and colleagues from different parts of the world.
One third of IBS faculty has extensive international experience. Similarly, one third of IBS students enrolled in different programmes come from abroad and are placed in organizations that have a wide range of international activities. This indeed makes the School one of the most international in Portugal.
For a well-established School like IBS, membership of global accreditation agencies such as the AACSB, AMBA and EFMD, and initiatives such as the GRLI and PRME, aims to improve the academic experience of all stakeholders but more importantly of faculty, students and staff.
This very ambitious agenda is overseen externally by a prestigious Corporate Advisory Board, International Scientific Advisory Board and an Audit Committee, and internally by the Scientific, Pedagogic, Masters and Undergraduate Committees. The breadth of these bodies enables the School to benefit from the best external guidance and internal collegiality to achieve its mission in the most efficient and effective manner.
I am optimistic about the School’s capacity to prepare and equip future managers and leaders with the knowledge to make a meaningful impact on organisations and society in a global world.
