Freie Universität Berlin was founded in 1948 by professors and students, in response to the persecution faced by students who took a critical eye of the system at Universität Unter den Linden, at that time located in the Soviet sector of the divided city. The idea of founding a free university found widespread support in the international community, including financial support.
Studying at Freie Universität Berlin involves a number of legal and administrative issues that students need to keep in mind. Most information and services are available online. For example, once students have successfully completed the online application and enrollment processes, they can register for classes and exams online via the Campus Management system. Many courses also involve an online (e-learning) component.
Intensive cooperation with other universities and independent research institutions as well as private enterprise reinforces and broadens the fundamental, application, and contract research carried out at Freie Universität as well as the universitys position as a competitive research institution on a global scale. The main features of Freie Universitäts research activities include the broad variety of global academic and scientific cooperation arrangements in place as part of alliance projects and interdisciplinary networks with other entities active in research.
The Career Service provides information and individual advising with regard to internships, application strategies, occupational fields, study and career prospects, and domestic scholarships.The Career Service advises and supports students with the organization of their internship abroad and provides information on financing possibilities for the internships. Every Tuesday there are open office hours from 12 to 2 p.m. for issues regarding internships abroad.

The central services of Freie Universität offer a large number of resources, including advisory services, for the entire university community. Some services and facilities are also available to those not affiliated with the university. The housing option chosen by a participant is considered final and binding for the entire semester. No (partial or full) refund of fees used for homestay or apartment arranged by the program is possible after June 1 (in case of Fall semester) or December 1 (in case of Spring semester).
The Lankwitz campus is home to the Institute of Geological Sciences and the Institute of Geographical Sciences. The Department of Earth Sciences also comprises the Institute of Meteorology and the Institute for Space Sciences, which are located in Steglitz.Habelschwerdter Allee 45 (the "Rost- and Silberlaube") and Fabeck Street 23-25 ("Holzlaube") together are the location of the largest university building complex in Dahlem. The complex houses several humanities and social science subjects, as well as 14 smaller departments from the Department of History and Cultural Studies.
Freie Universität Berlin is a member of various organizations and networks at the regional, national, and international levels, including the Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe (UNICA) and the European Universities Association (EUA).Important partnerships at the level of implementation of international exchange projects include the university’s membership in the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the European Association for International Education (EAIE), the Association of International Educators (NAFSA), and the Asia Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE).
