The University Centre of the Westfjords is a small higher educational organization, which was established in 2005 and began operations in January 2006.
Through distance learning, Westfjords residents can access education without having to move away from home. The University Centre provides distance learning students with facilities for teleconferencing, group work facilities and reading rooms. There tend to be about 100 distance learning students per year. In recent years the trend has been towards more and smaller groups, though the total number of students has remained stable.
In 2008 and 2009 the University Centre offered, in collaboration with Reykjavík University, preparatory studies (Frumgreinanám) for about 40 local and distance learning students in the Westfjords.
Many organisations offer scholarships or grants. Some of these might help you to study for a Master at University Centre of the West Fjords!

Accommodation is inexpensive, the town is cozy and picturesque, shops and services are all within walking distance, and the University Centre's facilities are spacious and welcoming.
The University Centre has a small library with a collection of books and other media. The largest part of our resources are acquired for the master's programme in Coastal and Marine Management. This part of the library is highly specialized, but also balanced, in accordance with the diverse topics taught on the programme.
The University Centre of the Westfjords offers students access to wireless internet. It is anticipated that students have laptop computers with wireless internet cards, though it is possible to set up wired internet connections for students in exceptional circumstances. The wireless connection is open and does not require a password to access.
The University Centre of the Westfjords offers excellent facilities for distance learning students of universities across Iceland.
There are six teaching rooms at the Centre, two of which have teleconferencing facilities. The rooms are intended for teaching, but are also used as reading and working rooms for students when there is no teaching in progress.
The Centre’s main corridor also houses reading and group work areas, as well as lockers for student use. There are further reading rooms on the ground floor which students can use for quiet private work.
