The University of Southampton is a truly international institution with a global reputation for excellence in leading-edge research. The University was founded in 1862 as the Hartley Institute and was granted the Royal Charter in 1952. Considered to be one of the leading research hubs in the UK, the University of Southampton is ranked 86th in the world among only 18 UK universities to make the top 100 (QS World University Rankings 2013). It is also a member of the prestigious Russell Group and invigorating academic experience to more than 23,000 students of which 3,500 are international from more than 100 different countries.
The state-of-the-art facilities and supportive environment at the University offer a unique and exciting experience for students. The University has five campuses in Southampton and the School of Art in Winchester. Southampton offers a safe, diverse and multi-cultural environment for international students. Students at the University of Southampton can avail of a huge range of facilities and services on campus.
There are five libraries located across the University's campuses. The largest is The Hartley Library, which is located at the Highfield campus. The Hartley Library contains five floors of books and journals and is home to the University Archives and Special Collectioms. There are also 86,000 e-books, and several hundred workstations. Libraries can also be found on Avenue campus, Winchester School of Art, Southampton General Hospital and the National Oceanography Centre.
The University of Southampton offers world-class sports facilities. Our Jubilee Sports Centre, situated on Highfield Campus, contains a 25 metre swimming pool, 160 fitness stations and an eight court sports hall. The Students Union building also provides students with four squash courts, a four-court sports hall, bouldering wall, martial arts studio and multi-purpose rooms.
Students can purchase a membership for gym access and there are large numbers of fitness classes available.
There are several eat outs at the University campus. Right from the The Bridge, which offers students a sumptuous lunch, to the SUSU Cafe, where students can just grab a quick sandwich, there are numerous places that cater to the different tastes and needs of students.
Southampton, being a truly multi faith University, offers religious facilities and caters to students belonging to different faiths.
The Southampton University Students Union (SUSU) is the place where students can get together to have fun and make new friends from all over the world. There are more than 200 sporting and social clubs and societies for students to choose from.
For the artistically inclined, Highfield campus hosts three internationally celebrated arts venues - the Nuffield Theatre, the Turner Sims Concert Hall and the John Hansard Gallery. These run programmes of classics, revivals, new theatre and studio performances besides conducting exhibitions that include painting, video and installations.
Students who would like to improve their English or want to learn a new language are encouraged to use the facilities of the Centre for Language Study Resources include two laboratories, a quiet reading room, an extensive library of publications, audio and video materials, and many more
Southampton is one of the most lively and dynamic cities in the south of England. It offers a vibrant and varied nightlife, numerous leisure facilities, superb heritage attractions, bustling marinas, beautiful parks and great places to eat and drink. Southampton is just 75 miles (120km) from London and 21 miles (35km) from the Channel ports. Southamptons international airport serves 50 UK and European destinations.
Highfield campus, the University's main campus, is set in green and pleasantly landscaped surroundings. It is a place for new and refurbished student facilities, such as the Jubilee Sports Centre and Students' Union, the Hartley Library, a range of cafés and restaurants, a bookshop, a post office and four major banks.
