About

The University of Southampton is a truly international institution with a global reputation for excellence in leading-edge research. The University was founded in 1862 as the Hartley Institute and was granted the Royal Charter in 1952. Considered to be one of the leading research hubs in the UK, the University of Southampton is ranked 75th in the world among only 17 UK universities to make the top 100 (QS World University Rankings 2011). It is also a member of the prestigious Russell Group and invigorating academic experience to more than 23,000 students of which 3,500 are international from more than 100 different countries.

The University has five campuses in Southampton and the School of Art in Winchester. Libraries

The Hartley Library, considered to be one of the leading research libraries in the UK, is located at the Highfield campus. The well-equipped library comprises over 1.6 million volumes, six million manuscripts and more than 8,000 current periodicals, of which 5,000 are available in electronic format.

Sports facilities

Students at the University are offered a wide-ranging programme of sport for all levels, from beginners to elite athletes. The Jubilee Sports Centre on the Highfield campus is a state-of-the-art £8.5 million complex, which includes a swimming pool, a gymnasium and a magnificent eight-court sports hall.

Restaurants and bars

There are several eat outs at the University campus. Right from the The Bridge, which offers students a sumptuous lunch, to Food on the Go where students can just grab a quick sandwich, there are numerous places that cater to the different tastes and needs of students.

Religious facilities

Southampton, being a truly multi faith University, offers religious facilities and caters to students belonging to different faiths.

Students' Union

The Southampton University Students Union (SUSU) is the place where students can get together to have fun and make new friends from all over the world. There are more than 200 sporting and social clubs and societies for students to choose from.

Art on campus

For the artistically inclined, Highfield campus hosts three internationally celebrated arts venues - the Nuffield Theatre, the Turner Sims Concert Hall and the John Hansard Gallery. These run programmes of classics, revivals, new theatre and studio performances besides conducting exhibitions that include painting, video and installations.

Centre for Language Study

Students who would like to improve their English or want to learn a new language are encouraged to use the facilities of the Centre for Language Study. Resources include two laboratories, a quiet reading room, an extensive library of publications, audio and video materials, and many more

Location & Campus

Southampton is one of the most lively and dynamic cities in the south of England. It offers a vibrant and varied nightlife, numerous leisure facilities, superb heritage attractions, bustling marinas, beautiful parks and great places to eat and drink. Southampton is just 75 miles (120km) from London and 21 miles (35km) from the Channel ports. Southamptons international airport serves 50 UK and European destinations.

Highfield campus, the University's main campus, is set in green and pleasantly landscaped surroundings. It is a place for new and refurbished student facilities, such as the Jubilee Sports Centre and Students' Union, the Hartley Library, a range of cafés and restaurants, a bookshop, a post office and four major banks.
